Philadelphia couldn't have started its season off any worse after a 7-0 home-opening loss, and it doesn't get easier on a travel day — I'm comfortably fading them in my Flyers vs. Devils prediction.
Yes, it's the New Jersey Devils' home opener tonight, and I'm hitting the button at 62% with Novig. The second night of a back-to-back will do no favors for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Tap into my NHL picks for Thursday, Oct. 1, and let's continue to build our bankroll.
TOP PICK
Flyers vs Devils prediction: Devils moneyline
I love the makeup of the New Jersey Devils. They were one of the better teams in the NHL in expected goals for (169.56) last year, and their top six can play with anyone in the league.
More than anything, I love fading the Philadelphia Flyers in this spot. They genuinely looked like the worst team in hockey last night against an aging Pittsburgh core.
Philly is now up against a young and hungry team with an offense funnelling through Jack Hughes on a back-to-back. Comfortably play the Devils tonight — the Flyers have landed in a buzzsaw.
I'd play this up to 64%.

Flyers vs Devils combo
In a game that should feature a ton of goals, I'm zeroing in on the biggest names on both teams early in the season. Volume is king, and we're getting a good price on two names who play in all situations for their respective teams.
After last night's debacle, expect Trevor Zegras to find the scoresheet. Going up against a team that just gave up a touchdown, also look for Hughes to lurk in the offensive zone, see plenty of ice time, and serve as a catalyst.
Hughes ranked 15th in the NHL in shot attempts per 60 last season, and with the puck finding the net, I'm expecting him to open the season with a couple of points.
Flyers vs Devils combo
- Devils moneyline
- Jack Hughes 2+ points
- Trevor Zegras 1+ assists
Flyers vs Devils player prop: Jack Hughes 2+ points
Not only was Hughes 15th in the NHL in shot attempts per 60 last year, but he also had a 37% share of possible ice time.
Expect to see him on the ice in all situations, and with Hughes playing point and quarterbacking the first power-play unit, the volume will be there for us to cash this play against a poor defensive team.
Flyers vs Devils goal scorer: Nico Hischier
Coming off a 28-goal campaign, here's another Devil who plays in all situations and centers the first power-play unit.
Nico Hischier ranked 23rd in the NHL in high-danger xGoals last season, giving me plenty of confidence that he'll be among the first Devils to find the scoresheet this season.
