A Top 15 showdown awaits in the Big 12 on Saturday, Oct. 24, as No. 10 Utah hosts No. 14 Houston in Salt Lake City for Week 8.
My Houston vs. Utah prop picks and college football picks for this matchup key in on Houston's quarterback and wide receiver play.
Best Houston vs Utah props
Prop pick #1: Conner Weigman Over 30.5 rushing yards
Conner Weigman isn't afraid to get it done with his arm (1,771 passing yards, 20 touchdowns) or his legs (229 rushing yards, six touchdowns). As the leader of Houston's potent offense ranked second in success rate, he's primed for a productive second half of the season.
Weigman's legs are particularly useful when the outcome is in doubt. He's rushed for 50+ yards against Texas Tech, UCF, and Oklahoma State.
Utah is the No. 10 team in the country, so Houston's staff won't be shy about utilizing Weigman's legs at Rice-Eccles. Weigman has averaged 46.5 rushing yards since last season started, and Utah's defense hasn't created many negative plays in the backfield (128th in front-seven havoc).
Prop pick #2: Koby Young Over 26.5 receiving yards
Utah's secondary is solid on a down-to-down basis, ranking seventh in passing success rate allowed, but can be susceptible to big plays (106th in passing explosiveness allowed). Enter big-play threat, Koby Young.
He leads the Cougars with a massive 19.3 average depth of target. When Weigman connects with him in stride, it leads to chunk gains, as Young averages 21.8 yards per reception.
Young only needs one or two receptions to cash this Over. Given that he's playing a full-time role and is the primary deep threat for a highly effective offense, I love this prop to cash.
Prop pick #3: Amare Thomas anytime touchdown
Amare Thomas has found the end zone 18 times since the start of last season.
Utah has an efficient offense, ranking 12th in success rate, so Houston will need to find pay dirt to keep pace. Thomas averages 2.47 yards per route run as a deadly weapon in the passing game, and his exploits will come in handy against a tough team.
The Utes have surrendered multiple passing scores in consecutive games. The secondary has shown signs of weakness, allowing 9.0 yards per attempt to Kansas and 8.3 to Colorado.
Houston's passing attack is superior to both of those teams by a wide margin, and Thomas leads the way.
