East Carolina heads to Tuscaloosa for a brutal Week 1 assignment against an Alabama team that enters the season with plenty of pressure despite Kalen DeBoer’s recent contract extension.
The Crimson Tide are favored by 28.5 points with a total of 52.5, and my East Carolina vs. Alabama prediction and college football picks for Saturday, Sept. 5, expect a motivated Bama team to leave little doubt against an almost completely rebuilt Pirates offense.
Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer received a contract extension, but that doesn’t eliminate the pressure surrounding this program.
The Tide fanbase remains restless after falling short of the standard it expects, and another sluggish opening-week performance would immediately turn up the temperature.
East Carolina returns just one offensive starter after losing quarterback Katin Houser, its top two rushers, four of its five leading receivers, and several important pieces up front.
That is an enormous amount of turnover before facing an Alabama defense that allowed just 297 yards and 19.2 points per game last season.
Bama also has an enormous talent advantage on the perimeter against a rebuilt Pirates secondary. Even with QB Keelon Russell making his first start, Alabama should create enough explosives to separate quickly.
Four touchdowns is a big margin, but this is exactly the type of opener DeBoer cannot afford to let become uncomfortable. I'd play to -30.

Alabama can dominate this game without the total ever becoming particularly threatened.
The Tide still have offensive questions. Alabama ranked 125th nationally in rushing at 104.1 yards per game last season and produced just 48 rushing yards across its final three games. Russell is also making his first collegiate start behind an offensive line replacing several pieces.
That could keep Alabama from turning every possession into points immediately.
The bigger issue for the Over is East Carolina. Almost every meaningful contributor from an offense that averaged nearly 33 points per game is gone, and the Pirates now have to break in a new quarterback against one of the best secondaries in the country.

I want the combo built around Alabama controlling this game from the opening possession while East Carolina struggles to sustain offense.
The Pirates’ 2025 offensive numbers shouldn’t carry much weight here because only one offensive starter returns. That lack of continuity becomes particularly problematic against an Alabama defense with enough speed in the secondary to force a new quarterback into long, difficult drives.
Alabama -28.5 and Under 52.5 naturally fit together if the Tide defense dictates the game. DeBoer has every reason to push for a convincing opener, but Alabama doesn’t need to score into the 50s to make a statement. Something in the neighborhood of 38-7 or 41-7 fits the handicap.
