The Texas Tech Red Raiders look to end a two-game skid when they visit Morgantown for a meeting with the West Virginia Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon.
Christian Anderson and JT Toppin lead a dangerous Red Raider attack.
I explain why they should lead the way in my Texas Tech vs. West Virginia predictions and college basketball picks for Sunday, February 8.
Texas Tech vs West Virginia prediction
Texas Tech vs West Virginia best bet: Texas Tech TT Over 71.5 (-120)
The West Virginia Mountaineers have some very strong defensive metrics this season. They rank 15th in 2p% defense, allow the 21st-lowest free-throw rate, and have a 47.9% eFG% that ranks 45th nationally.
But in Big XII play, the Mountaineers have already played three of the four best teams in the conference in terms of adjusted offensive efficiency. Arizona dropped 88 points on them. Houston scored 77. Iowa State put up 80.
While all of those games came on the road, Kansas—ranked sixth in the conference and 41st nationally—came into Morgantown and scored 75, albeit in defeat. That’s why I’m high on the Texas Tech Red Raiders to do the same.
For starters, Christian Anderson is set to return. His absence is a major reason the Red Raiders lost to Kansas. He’s a playmaker with tremendous vision, operating in an offense predicated on giving him space to operate by running a high amount of ball-screen and pick-and-roll action.
And then there’s JT Toppin. He will be a problem inside, even for this stout Mountaineer defense, with his ability to either post up or slash to the rim.
West Virginia allows the second-highest rate of 3pt shots in the conference, and the Red Raiders rank second in the conference with a 40.2% accuracy rate in Big XII play. They’re paced by Donovan Atwell and his 44.6% shooting from deep
The Mountaineers will want to turn this into a slog, playing one of the slowest paces in college basketball. But they turn the ball over nearly once every five offensive possessions, and doing so against this lethal Texas Tech transition offense will lead to easy points for the visitors.
Combine that with how efficiently the offense operates with Anderson at the controls, and this is a spot where the Red Raiders bounce back and score 75 or more.

Texas Tech vs West Virginia same-game parlay
Christian Anderson has turned playmaker more than scorer when he’s faced solid defenses, and I think this is a game where he should get plenty of assist opportunities.
With how much West Virginia turns the ball over, Anderson should be in plenty of spots where he can find open teammates in transition. Look for him to get 7+ against a Mountaineer team ranked 292nd in assist rate against.
Honor Huff shoots a high volume of outside shots, but he struggles to make them against good perimeter defenses. His 5-foot-10 frame makes it easier to challenge his shot, and he has made less than three of his triples in five of his last seven games.
Texas Tech allows the second-fewest three-point attempts in the Big XII, and he made just one of his nine attempts last weekend against a Baylor defense that defends the perimeter similarly to the Red Raiders.

Our beyond the arc SGP: Petty Cash!
Ball movement against this West Virginia defense is key, and the Mountaineers struggle against teams that can move it quickly to find open players. That’s why Anderson won’t be the only player racking up assists.
Jaylen Petty has been consistently dropping dimes, with at least three assists in five of his last six games. It also won’t surprise me to see him with the ball in his hands a bit more often as the Mountaineers try to force it out of Anderson’s mitts.
