The Texas Tech Red Raiders hope to end the season on a high note when they travel to Provo on Saturday night for a Big 12 showdown with the BYU Cougars.

JT Toppin’s injury has changed things for the Red Raiders, but his teammates have been stepping up in his absence.

I break down why Jaylen Petty will continue to do so in my Texas Tech vs. BYU predictions and college basketball picks for March 7.

Texas Tech vs BYU prediction

Texas Tech vs BYU best bet: Jaylen Petty Over 2.5 threes (+102)

In the four games since Texas Tech Red Raiders forward JT Toppin’s injury, Jaylen Petty has stepped up. He’s shot 52% from downtown in that span, connecting on 3+ treys in each of the last three outings.

Petty has basically lived outside the arc. Twenty-five of his 34 field goal attempts since Toppin’s injury have come from deep.

That shouldn’t change against a BYU Cougars defense that has allowed its last five opponents to shoot nearly 42% from 3-point range.

The Cougars rank 312th in 3-point defense since January 1. Petty will have Christian Anderson looking for him early and often, and I expect him to make it rain.

Texas Tech vs BYU same-game parlay

Donovan Atwell’s been bombing away as well. He’s made 21 treys in the last four games, attempting 41 in that timespan, and has made at least four in each of those contests.

Since Toppin’s injury, Christian Anderson has upped his usage and assist rates. He notched a 41.1% assist rate in those four games while averaging 8.25 dimes.

BYU ranks 262nd in assist rate against, allowing 66 over its last three games. Anderson should flirt with double-digit dimes against this shaky Cougar defense.

Texas Tech vs BYU SGP

  • Jaylen Petty Over 2.5 threes
  • Donovan Atwell Over 3.5 threes
  • Christian Anderson Over 7.5 assists

Our beyond the arc SGP: High Flyers!

BYU has lost four of five, although the one victory came against Iowa State. But injuries are really piling up for the Cougars, and this is an opponent that can take advantage and keep things close.

Both offenses are very efficient, and their defense has been average at best of late. I expect the Cougars to push the tempo, which will help drive the total over the number.

Texas Tech vs BYU SGP

  • Jaylen Petty Over 2.5 threes
  • Donovan Atwell Over 3.5 threes
  • Christian Anderson Over 7.5 assists
  • Texas Tech +2.5
  • Over 158.5
