The Providence Friars have opened Big East play with a 2-5 record and dropped three of the last four, while the Marquette Golden Eagles have lost three straight and nine of 10.
The Golden Eagles are favored at home, but they’ve lost their last two games ATS as favorites and covered just once in their last five home games.
My Providence at Marquette predictions and college basketball picks call for the Friars to cover on the road on Monday, January 19.
Providence vs Marquette prediction
Providence vs Marquette best bet: Providence +2 (-120)
As the Providence Friars should beat the Marquette Golden Eagles outright, getting two points is a gift.
Providence is 9-9 but hasn’t lost to a team ranked as low as Marquette (currently 131, per BarTorvik). The Friars have losses to No. 95 Colorado and No. 93 Xavier, but are 7-0 against teams ranked as low as Marquette. Providence is 2-0 against Quad III teams (like Marquette) and 7-0 against Quad III and lower.
The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, have lost to No. 116 Maryland, No. 104 Georgetown, and No. 115 DePaul, all ranked significantly lower than No. 76 Providence.
The Georgetown and Maryland losses were both at home, as well. Marquette is 1-13 against Quad III or better opponents, including 1-2 against Quad III teams (like Providence).
Providence has been without leading scorer Jason Edwards for the last two games. He’s listed on the injury report again, but the Friars posted an impressive win over Creighton without him.
Marquette’s Sean Jones has missed five games with a foot injury, while leading rebounder Ben Gold will be playing in his second straight game since returning to the lineup.
Providence has an efficient inside game at both ends of the floor and should win in a fast-paced game.

Providence vs Marquette same-game parlay
Providence plays at the 13th-fastest pace in the nation. Marquette also plays fast, at No. 68.
The Friars have gone Over in four straight and seven of nine, while Marquette has been Over in its last three. Now, set all of that aside, because this cutoff for the points total is through the roof. It’s 10 points higher than anything Marquette has seen in the last nine games, and Providence hasn’t faced anything this high in its last 10. Despite that, we’re still leaning Over. It’s just not a no-brainer.
Nigel James has shared the ball more in the last five games, averaging 5.4 assists, up more than an assist per game from his season average. But the last game, when he had eight dimes, was the only time he’s topped 6.5 assists in a college game. That total cutoff is far too high.

Our beyond the arc SGP: No Anti-Vaaksers Here
With Edwards likely out, Stefan Vaaks is a leading candidate to take on the scoring responsibilities. He’s scored at least 20 in his last three games, and he’s done it while only hitting 8 of 28 from three. He can score inside and out and get to the line.
