The Los Angeles Clippers are surging, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves look legit, and the reigning NBA champion Denver Nuggets are lurking.
The Western Conference looks scary at the top, but are people overlooking the Phoenix Suns?
Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and the Suns entered the season among the favorites in the NBA odds to reach the Finals out of the West. However, a slow start to the season put them on the back burner as other teams shot up the standings.
Quietly, things have changed ever since Bradley Beal got healthy. Phoenix is 15-6 since his return, tied for the second most wins in that span.
Tonight, the Suns will try to stay hot when they face the upstart Utah Jazz. I break down this Western Conference matchup and bring you the best bet in my NBA picks for Jazz vs. Suns on February 8.

Jazz vs Suns predictions
Six weeks ago, the Phoenix Suns looked completely out of sorts, finding themselves below .500 after a loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day. However, with Bradley Beal returning to the lineup just a few games later, the team has since caught fire.
Beal not only gives the Suns a reliable third-scoring option behind Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, but he extends the bench as well, giving the team more depth. And it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Beal hasn’t missed a game since December 29, and the Suns are 15-6 since then. With three dangerous scorers in the lineup, the Suns are much harder to defend and have been playing excellent with the basketball in their hands. Phoenix ranks third in offensive rating and leads the NBA in effective field goal percentage over this 21-game stretch.
Defensively, the Suns haven't been too shabby either, ranking 11th in defensive rating over that same period.
Tonight, they’ll take on a Utah Jazz team that has had a similar trajectory this season, even if the expectations are not remotely the same. Utah enters this game off impressive back-to-back wins over the Milwaukee Bucks and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, while those are impressive wins, both came on their home floor. Away from Salt Lake City, the Jazz are just 9-19 on the season.
Utah is also 25th in defensive rating and 20th in opponent eFG%. Most of those struggles come on the perimeter, where the Jazz rank 27th in opponent 3-point shooting percentage and surrender the third most made threes per game.
The Jazz may be able to keep up with the Suns for a while, but the combination of defensive struggles and road woes will come back and bite them against Phoenix's trio of stars.
My best bet: Suns -6 (-112 at DraftKings)
Jazz vs Suns same-game parlay
This will be a Phoenix-themed same-game parlay as I continue to pick on Utah’s defensive weaknesses, starting at the 3-point line. Durant is shooting a crazy good 45.3% from 3-point range this season and he’s hit three or more threes in six of his last 12 games.
Teams can also take advantage of the Jazz by making the extra pass, as Utah allows the second most opponent assists per game. Booker’s assists have been down a bit lately but he still averages 7.1 for the season and now faces a favorable matchup on Thursday.

Jazz vs Suns spread and Over/Under analysis
The Suns opened this Western Conference showdown as 6.5-point home favorites and they have bounced back-and-forth between that and -6 for most of the day.
Meanwhile, the total hit the board at a lofty 243.5. While you might expect this game to be high-scoring, early money has come in on the Under, putting the number down to 232.
This number appears to underrate the Suns' recent defensive performances. In seven games this season where the total points exceeded 240, Phoenix has gone 7-0 to the Under. Moreover, when these teams faced off in November, the contest required overtime to reach the Over, with only 230 total points scored by the end of regulation.
Ultimately, I would lean towards the Under for tonight's game.
