Expert NBA ATS picks: Oct. 30
Hornets vs Wizards:
+1.5
I'm liking the Charlotte Hornets in this spot, despite their 30th-ranked offense. Charlotte has been a stout defensive group, and they've allowed 7.6 fewer points per game than the Washington Wizards. The Hornets already beat Washington by seven points on Tuesday as well.
Bulls vs Celtics:
+16.5
The Boston Celtics are more than capable of a blowout here, but they barely beat the Nets a couple of nights ago despite being a massive favorite, and the Chicago Bulls just scored 127 points against the Knicks. I have no doubt Boston has the firepower to win this contest, but 16.5 points is too large for my liking.
Pistons vs Nets:
-7.5
The Detroit Pistons have gone 4-1 ATS this season and boast one of the top defenses in the league, allowing the second-fewest points. Cade Cunningham and Co. take on a Brooklyn Nets team that is giving up 124 ppg and 30.8 assists per contest. Detroit should feast.
Knicks vs 76ers:
-1.5
I'm eyeing the New York Knicks to cover a slim 1.5 points. The Philadelphia 76ers have looked fantastic, but they're struggling on the boards, and the Knicks can exploit that weakness. They're fourth in rebounds. NY has also won two straight, and Jaylen Brown is at risk of missing this contest, which could give the Knicks a clear edge.
Magic vs Raptors:
-5.5
The Toronto Raptors have the best defensive rating, while the Orlando Magic own the second-worst offensive rating. Toronto already beat them by 30 this season, and even without Kawhi Leonard, the Raps have enough firepower to dominate this matchup.
Pacers vs Heat:
+7.5
The Indiana Pacers have covered the spread in three of their five games so far, and the Miami Heat haven't proven enough for me to back them at a large number of 7.5. Yes, Tyrese Haliburton is out, but this is still a Heat team ranked 27th in defensive rating, and 0-3 at home.
Rockets vs Mavericks:
-6.5
The Houston Rockets have been a well-oiled machine, ranking third in offensive rating and ninth in defensive rating. They're also a perfect 5-0 ATS, and already beat the Dallas Mavericks in the season opener by 19 points. They should thrive.
Clippers vs Timberwolves:
+7.5
The Minnesota Timberwolves are without Anthony Edwards, who is averaging 33.3 PPG, leaving a massive hole in their offense. The Los Angeles Clippers have been solid defensively, allowing just 108 PPG, and should be able to keep this game relatively close.
Lakers vs Warriors:
-2.5
The Los Angeles Lakers have been firing on all cylinders offensively, averaging 123.2 PPG, and already beat the Golden State Warriors by 22 points this season. With Luka Doncic returning and Golden State ranking 25th in defensive rating, I'll back the Lakers to cover this small number.
Nuggets vs Suns:
-4.5
The Phoenix Suns rank last in defensive rating and are allowing nearly 125 PPG, setting up a favorable matchup for Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Phoenix is also missing key interior pieces. The Joker will exploit that weakness.
