The New York Mets look for a series sweep on Sunday afternoon when they face the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
The Mets have opened up a 2.5-game gap over Cincinnati for the final NL Wild Card spot, and hope David Peterson can atone for his brutal outing against Atlanta last week.
My Mets vs. Braves predictions and MLB picks explain why the road team should easily pick up another victory on Sunday, August 24.
Mets vs Braves prediction
Mets vs Braves best bet: Mets -1.5 (+122)
The New York Mets appear to have busted out of their slump just in time. With the Cincinnati Reds breathing down their necks for the final Wild Card spot, the Metropolitans have seen their bats come to life with 21 runs in the first two games against the Atlanta Braves.
Friday night saw them post a season-high 21 hits, before they sent six different pitches over the fence on Saturday. Sunday sees them taking on Bryce Elder, a pitcher who had a rare, strong start against them a week ago as Atlanta won 4-3.
But Elder has been atrocious at home, with a 7.43 ERA that is more than two runs higher than his road mark. He’s also given up 19 home runs in 111 2/3 IP this season, notable given the temps will be in the 90s with high humidity on Sunday afternoon.
Francisco Lindor is on fire at the top of New York’s lineup, with an 11-game hitting streak during which he’s posted a .489 average with four home runs. Elder’s going to have to navigate a lineup with power throughout, and he will struggle given his low strikeout rate and high walk rate.
On the flip side, the Braves are horrid against LHP. David Peterson has a 2.79 ERA in day games, and RHB have hit just .245 against him this season. While the Braves beat him up the last time they met, it’s worth noting he endured a long weather delay after which he walked four batters in one inning.
The Atlanta Braves have won just 12 times this season as underdogs, a winning percentage of less than 31%. They’ve also lost eight of their last 10 at Truist Park, and have seven straight home losses against teams above .500 on the season. And in those seven defeats, they’ve failed to cover the run line a single time.
New York has everything to play for, while the Braves are counting down the days until the season comes to an end. I’ll back the Mets to cover the spread here against Elder and a struggling Atlanta bullpen.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Mets vs Braves same-game parlay (SGP)
Francisco Lindor has 3+ H/R/R in seven of his last 10 games, including three of his four games against the Braves in that span. He was one of the few Mets to have success against Elder in Atlanta’s 4-3 win last week, hitting a solo shot in the third inning, before later adding an infield single in the 8th, and he’s got six hits vs. Elder in 10 ABs with a pair of home runs.
The switch-hitting Jurickson Profar is one of the few Braves to have success against LHP this season, posting a .280 average compared to just .247 vs RHP. He’s faced Peterson eight times, registering five hits without a single strikeout, and he’s gone hitless in just four of his last 13 starts.
