A's vs Angels Picks and Predictions: Oakland's Struggles vs LHP Makes Home Halos A Good Value

The Angels look to stay in the AL playoff conversation when they host the A's tonight. Oakland trots out one of its horses in Chris Bassitt, but the A's struggles against lefties — and facing Patrick Sandoval — has us leaning with the home Halos.

the Oakland A's earned a victory over the Los Angeles Angels last night in the opener of a four-game divisional series, and the two AL West teams will play Round 2 tonight at Angel Stadium.

This game features a more even matchup of talented starters, the Angels as slight MLB betting home dogs as they try to keep within shouting distance of the A's in the AL playoff race.

Can the Angels stay relevant, or will Oakland win back-to-back games to start off this four-game series? Find out our thoughts in our A's vs. Angels MLB picks and predictions for Friday, July 30.

A's vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Chris Bassitt (10-3, 3.46 ERA): Bassitt has allowed 14 earned runs over his last 23 1-3 innings of work, which is a major contrast from what he had been doing before his last four starts. Prior to this rough stretch, the righty had allowed two or fewer earned runs in five consecutive outings, but he has a good opportunity to get back on track in this one: He has allowed just two earned runs in 16 2-3 innings of work against the Angels this season.

Patrick Sandoval (3-4, 3.52 ERA): Sandoval was dominant in his last trip to the mound, as he had 13 strikeouts across 8 2-3 innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. The lefty has some really intriguing stuff, which is why he’s been able to rack up so many strikeouts this year. He also happened to allow only two total earned runs in his previous two starts against the Athletics.

Moneyline pick

Bassitt allowed two earned runs in 7 2-3 innings of work in his last trip to Angel Stadium but Los Angeles should be able to turn up the heat in this game.

The Angels had scored six or more runs in three of their previous four games prior to last night's shutout loss. This offense has been very good against right-handed pitching all season, as they are fifth in the league in batting average against righties and are in the top half in both homers and RBIs against RHP.

Bassitt has been a stud for Oakland this year but he could have trouble — like basically every other pitcher in the world — with a guy like Shohei Ohtani. The MLB home run leader, Ohtani is batting .279 with 24 homers and 57 RBIs against righties. He has homered in three of his last five games, but the question is can he get men on base ahead of him — 22 of his 37 home runs this year were with the bases empty, so we're looking at guys like David Fletcher and Jose Iglesias to step up and occupy the basepaths ahead of the AL MVP favorite.

Sandoval is far from a proven thing on the mound, but he’s a high-strikeout pitcher and gets to face an Athletics team that has the fourth-worst BAbip in baseball against lefties this season. That means that while Oakland makes contact, it doesn’t necessarily make good contact against southpaws — leading to us giving the edge to the Halos tonight.

PREDICTION: Angels (+102)

Over/Under pick

Bassitt has been one of the more consistent starters in baseball this season, so it’s hard to envision him letting the Angels put up a big number in this game.

Bassitt has allowed just two runs against the Angels over 16 2-3 innings this year. If Los Angeles is going to win this one, it’s going to be in a low-scoring effort, meaning Sandoval will also have to bring it tonight.

However, Sandoval seems like he is up for the challenge, as he has really been in a groove lately.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
