Politics

Michigan sports betting market outlook

The Michigan sports betting market is maturing, but monthly betting revenues and handles reached new highs in 2024, earning a total handle of $5.51 billion— an encouraging sign for all parties involved. Given that there are 31 total legal sportsbooks between online and in-person operators currently, it seems unlikely that Michigan will accept any new operators going live in the state anytime soon. However, due to its large population of over 10 million people, it wouldn't surprise us if they were to open either their digital or retail doors to new sportsbooks. 

Michigan has been reluctant to accept daily fantasy sports and social betting sites, though. As the state's legislative committee ruled in 2023 to ban sports betting-like contests, major companies like ProphetX were not allowed to operate in the Wolverine State.

2019: On Dec. 20, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signs HB 4916 and HB 4308, among other bills, legalizing Michigan sports betting and daily fantasy sports contests. 

2018: The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) is struck down as the Supreme Court lifts the federal sports betting ban. Each state may now legalize and regulate online and retail sports wagering.
