Jordan Kyrou's line has controlled a team-best 77.2% of the expected goals share through two games. The Washington Capitals winger is in a good spot to break through and produce against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jordan Kyrou hasn't recorded a point through two games but has done a great job of helping Washington (59%) tilt the ice and generate chances.

My Penguins vs. Capitals prediction expect Kyrou to break through in a high-pace matchup against Pittsburgh tonight.

Let's take a closer look at my NHL picks for Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Penguins vs Capitals prediction: Washington Capitals moneyline

I like the Washington Capitals to 62%.

They added an abundance of quality forwards in the off-season, giving them one of the deepest and most talented groups in the league. It has shown up early.

Despite playing road games against the defending Stanley Cup Champions, and a quality Lightning team the following night, the Capitals rank eighth in expected goals per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play.

Their offense looks to have real teeth, and they should generate plenty of offense against a Pittsburgh Penguins team sitting fourth in 5-on-5 pace.

Logan Thompson, the NHL’s leader in Goals Saved Above Expected last season, will take care of the rest.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Capitals are averaging 84.39 shot attempts per 60 minutes with Kyrou on the ice, more than 10 clear of the closest teammate.

Penguins vs Capitals combo

I’m combining Washington on the moneyline with Jordan Kyrou to pick up a point and record a couple of shots in the process.

Kyrou hit the scoresheet in 12 of the last 13 games his team entered as -150 favorites or more.

He is a player who consistently had a 2.5 shot total, sometimes jumping to 3.5 in more advantageous matchups. This is a low bar for Kyrou to clear, even in fewer minutes.

While the Capitals have more depth than the Blues did, Kyrou was their marquee addition of the off-season and they’ll want to get him going. This is a great game environment to do just that.

  • Jordan Kyrou Over 0.5 points

 TOP PICK
Penguins vs Capitals player prop: Jordan Kyrou Over 0.5 points

I’m on Kyrou to pick up his first point of the season, and see value to 56%.

Kyrou and the Protas brothers have dominated the run of play at even-strength, controlling a team-best 77.2% of the xG share.

He is also skating on the second power play unit which, in my estimation, is the more talented group.

Given his quality linemates and cushy usage, it should be no surprise the Capitals are generating 39.77 shots on target and 4.90 expected goals per 60 minutes with Kyrou on the ice. Elite marks.

A high-pace matchup with the Penguins should help bring out the best in Kyrou – certainly more so than more physical, stingier opponents like the Hurricanes and Lightning.

Penguins vs Capitals goal scorer: Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin is an appealing target for a goal to 38%.

Spencer Carbury is giving him absolute cupcake minutes, with his on-ice offensive zone faceoff rate approaching 90%.

He is putting Ovechkin exclusively in easy situations to produce offense, and does not want him on the ice otherwise. That’s the best way to maximize Ovechkin’s best trait, which is shooting the puck.

Ovechkin always seems to have his best against the Penguins, and this is the first home game of the season after announcing this is his final year. Ovechkin will no doubt have extra pep in his step for this matchup.

It’s worth noting Ovechkin scored in 42% of Washington’s victories last year, and they are heavy favorites tonight.
