The goal in hockey is, well, to score goals. As many as you can, actually, with the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy awarded to whichever player does their job the best.
Introduced in 1999, the Rocket Richard trophy is to be awarded to the player(s) who scored the most goals in the regular season. Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin has won the award a record nine times, but he's been overshadowed recently by a Toronto Maple Leaf, who has his eyes on a third straight trophy.

Favorite to win the Rocket Richard Trophy
Connor McDavid (+160)
Connor McDavid is going to have himself a full trophy case by the end of the season at this rate. McDavid has completely dominated offensively as per usual and now leads the league not only in points (35) but goals (16). "McJesus" is the betting favorite for the Hart Trophy, and if he can keep up this scoring rate, he'll add yet another piece of hardware to the collection.
Nobody looked more unstoppable than Auston Matthews last season, who potted 60 goals in just 73 games. It's been a bit of a slow start to the season for the Leafs' sniper, who has nine tallies in the first 20 games. In fact, "AM34" isn't even the top goalscorer on his team. With that said, oddsmakers know just how quickly Matthews can heat up, keeping him in the Top 2 for now.
David Pastrnak (+800)
Enter "Pasta". David Pastrnak — along with the whole Bruins roster — has been damn near perfect this season. The right winger has 12 goals in 19 games and also sits third in the league in scoring (29). With how well Boston is playing, Pastrnak could be lighting the lamp all season long.
Understanding NHL Rocket Richard odds
Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. When the regular season is nearly finished and a consensus has emerged, you might see a player with a minus sign (-) ahead of his odds, like this:
- Auston Matthews -400
The (-) means that Matthews is the odds-on favorite, and a bettor would need to wager $400 to win $100. Other contenders in the Rocket Richard race might have plus (+) odds to win.
- Nathan MacKinnon +650
Here, a bettor stood to profit $650 for every $100 wagered on MacKinnon to lead the league in goals.
