Tage Thompson will have plenty of chances to shoot vs. a Philadelphia Flyers team sitting 31st in shot share.

The well-rested Buffalo Sabres (64%) are healthy home favorites against the Philadelphia Flyers tonight.

My top Flyers vs. Sabres prediction backs Buffalo's biggest star, Tage Thompson, to record at least four shots. I'm also targeting the Under in a matchup featuring two teams with contrasting offensive fortunes.

Read on for a full breakdown of my NHL picks for Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Flyers vs Sabres prediction: Under 6.5

Play to 58%.

It's hard not to jump on the Under when the Philadelphia Flyers are involved.

They've shown little life offensively, averaging just 1.55 goals per game, ranking 30th in shot generation, and converting a putrid 12.9% of their power-play opportunities.

There isn't a clear path to offensive production against the Buffalo Sabres, either. Buffalo ranks just outside the Top 10 in shot suppression and takes very few penalties. Only six teams have spent less time shorthanded.

For all their faults, the Flyers rank seventh in team save percentage. Their goaltending should help limit Buffalo to four goals or fewer, which would go a long way toward keeping this game Under the total.

 TOP PICK
Flyers vs Sabres player prop: Tage Thompson Over 3.5 shots

I'm targeting Thompson to record 4+ shots, playable to 53%.

Buffalo's top sniper has been firing away at home this season, averaging 5.2 shots on goal per game while going Over 3.5 in four of five contests.

What makes that production especially impressive is that he's faced only one opponent ranked in the bottom 16 in shot suppression.

The schedule has been difficult, yet Thompson has still managed to generate shots at an elite rate.

Now, he gets his most enticing matchup of the season against the Flyers. Philadelphia ranks 31st in shot suppression and sits in the Bottom 6 in shots allowed from both of Thompson's primary shooting zones.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Tage Thompson has played at least 100 minutes with five different forwards since the beginning of last season. He's generated shot attempts at a higher rate alongside Jiri Kulich than with any other linemate.

Flyers vs Sabres combo

I'm combining the Under with Tage Thompson to record at least four shots and Matvei Michkov to finish with fewer than three.

Thompson is averaging 5.2 shots on 7.8 attempts per game at home this season, despite facing four Top-16 shot-suppression teams, including three ranked inside the Top 8.

He should have a much easier time against the Flyers, who are allowing nearly 32 shots per game across all situations.

Michkov, meanwhile, is averaging just 1.3 shots on 3.5 attempts this season and has played 15 minutes or fewer in four straight games. He cleared 2.5 shots only 27% of the time last season when seeing that kind of workload.

Flyers vs Sabres combo

  • Under 6.5
  • Tage Thompson Over 3.5 shots
  • Matvei Michkov Under 2.5 shots

Flyers vs Sabres goal scorer: Zach Benson

Zach Benson has recorded at least four shot attempts in five of his last seven games, including 13 attempts over his last two.

He's consistently generating scoring chances, with a healthy share coming from around the net. That's a big reason why he ranks second on the Sabres with 3.6 expected goals.

That increase in shot volume should continue against the Flyers, who rank second-last in both shot share and expected goal share.

Philadelphia also prefers a lower-event, grind-it-out style of hockey that suits Benson's skill set perfectly.
