The Seattle Seahawks are a significant step up in competition for the Atlanta Falcons, presenting problems on both sides of the ball.

Oddsmakers have visiting Seattle as a hefty road favorite, and my Seahawks vs. Falcons predictions agree with that assessment.

Here are my best NFL picks for December 7.

Seahawks vs Falcons prediction

Seahawks vs Falcons Best bet: Seattle Seahawks -7 (-112)

A rundown of the Atlanta Falcons' recent foes pales in comparison to what the Seattle Seahawks bring to the table in Week 14.

The Falcons lost to the New York Jets, pulled away late vs. the New Orleans Saints, and came up short in overtime to the Carolina Panthers in the last three outings. That victory over NOLA is Atlanta’s lone win since Week 7 (2-4-1 ATS).

At the center of those struggles is the quarterback position. Starter Michael Penix Jr. is out for the season with a knee injury, leaving the aging arm (and legs) of Kirk Cousins under center. Cousins is a shell of his former self and will be a sitting duck for one of the fiercest pass rushes in the land.

The Seahawks generate the second-highest pressure rate per dropback and rank No. 3 in pass rush win rate at ESPN, sitting second in QB hurries and fourth in total sacks. They do this all without needing extra rushers, blitzing less than 20% of the time.

That allows Mike Macdonald’s defense a lot of flexibility with the linebackers and secondary. Seattle can drop more into coverage or dedicate linebackers to plugging up the rushing lane, which is what it’ll do against the Falcons' two-headed RB monster of Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier.

The Seahawks, who are also the No. 1 run defense in EPA allowed per carry and run defense DVOA at FTN, will sell out to stop the Atlanta ground game and make Cousins beat them. And with game script saying the Falcons will play from behind, that puts even more stress on the passing playbook.

The veteran QB is serviceable when kept clean and can also break down a blitz. But when under pressure from just the front four, Cousins’ production tanks, and he isn’t mobile enough to keep plays alive. He’s been sacked five times in the past two games by defenses much less disruptive than Seattle.

Atlanta offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has been forced to tinker with his playbook due to the quarterback swap, opting for more play-action with Cousins under center — rather than the shotgun and pistol formations he likes to use.

That change messes with route timing but also leaves Cousins hanging around the pocket a little longer. Not what you want against this swarming Seahawks pressure.

One of my first bets of the week was grabbing Seattle on the opener at -7.5, with some books hitting the board as high as -8.5. This has since dropped to a touchdown with early play on Atlanta. I believe the spread should be flirting with Seahawks -9.

Seahawks vs Falcons same-game parlay

Seattle’s defense is coming for Cousins, and the Seahawks’ explosive passing attack gets to come inside on the fast track in the ATL.

Given the big spread, Seattle will be running a lot in the second half. Zach Charbonnet will see a solid share of carries with his projections flirting with 50 rushing yards.

With Cousins under pressure, Robinson will be a quick release. He caught five balls versus the Jets last week.
