This Friday, the Falcons and Cowboys meet at 8 pm at AT&T Stadium, with the game being shown on NFL Network.
Neither team has a win to their name in preseason so far, but with health a concern this close to the season, my Falcons vs. Cowboys predictions believe this game is unlikely to have fireworks.
Don’t miss our NFL picks for Friday, August 22.
Falcons vs Cowboys prediction
Falcons vs Cowboys Best bet: Under 35.5 (-110)
This game is not going to be one for the purists, with both teams set to play second and third-string lineups. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be hugely important to those on the roster bubble, but it does mean that it’s likely to be of low quality and potentially low scoring.
When it comes to the Atlanta Falcons, this is a team who have held both Michael Penix Jr and Kirk Cousins out of preseason action so far. Raheem Morris hasn’t got the best record as a preseason coach, and it’s clear that he doesn’t value these games relative to the risk incurred by featuring his best players. So far, it’s been Easton Stick leading the team out, and he’ll be back to play once again here. It’s been an unspectacular showing from him, with Stick failing to secure a victory and throwing just two touchdown passes.
Previously, he’d been alongside Emory Jones, who has since been waived with an injury designation. The team went out and grabbed former Dallas man Ben DiNucci, but the 28-year-old isn’t a difference maker here. The Falcons are the fifth team he’s been a part of in the NFL since being drafted in 2020, and he’s only managed one competitive start. He’ll get reps on Friday, which is both a blessing for him but also unfortunate in some ways, given the lack of time that he’s had to prepare for this.
Brian Schottenheimer, like Morris, has also kept his star quarterback from preseason action so far. Dak Prescott is an experienced veteran at this point, and the team knows exactly what to expect from him. Most importantly, they need to manage his return back into the team, having missed nine games last season following an injury in November. He’s ready for Week One, and it’s not worth the risk of playing him. That means the team will be continuing to give Joe Milton and Will Grier the keys to the offense. Milton has looked poor in preseason, but gets the start here with his HC wanting more opportunity to “find out more about [him].” It makes a lot of sense with Grier being a more known commodity but it only increases the likelihood of this being a game devoid of quality.
The total points line for this game opened at 36.5 and has dropped to 35.5, but given that the Falcons have averaged 15 points scored in the preseason, and the Dallas Cowboys 17, it’s hard to see this game exploding into life. These are two teams that are almost entirely focused on starting the season in full health, as evidenced by their lineup decisions. With that in mind, you have to back the Under here.
