The Pistons stormed back to win their season opener, and Ed Scimia is expecting them to get another win tonight against a Miami team still figuring out its new lineup.

The Detroit Pistons (-1.5) are favored to beat the Miami Heat on Friday night, and my Pistons vs. Heat predictions believe their spread is more than fair.

Detroit is the more proven team in this matchup, and their spread anchors my free NBA picks for Friday, Oct. 23.

 TOP PICK
Pistons vs Heat prediction: Pistons -1.5

The Detroit Pistons needed a massive fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Boston Celtics in their opener, but expectations are still sky high for last year's top seed in the Eastern Conference. Cade Cunningham opened with 22 points and eight assists, while Jalen Duren added 22 points and nine rebounds in the win.

The Miami Heat have big expectations this year as well after adding Giannis Antetokounmpo in the offseason. But while Giannis played well, Miami's opener saw them take a 25-point loss at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves, with the Heat struggling on defense and failing to find much offense beyond their new star.

Detroit is an established and proven winner, while Miami is still learning how to best play with a new-look lineup. I like the Pistons to cover at -3.5 points or better tonight.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Detroit ranked second in the NBA in defensive efficiency last season (106.6), which bodes well against a Miami team that scored 106 points on 24% shooting from deep in its opener.

Pistons vs Heat combo

Along with taking the Pistons to cover, I'm also backing the Under in tonight's game.

These teams hit the Under in their last two meetings, both coming in below tonight's total. Miami also hit the Under in their opening game this season, while Detroit played to a total of 234 points against the Celtics on Tuesday.

I'm also targeting Jalen Duren to score at least 20 points in Friday's game. Duren averaged 19.5 ppg last season, and I see him exceeding that total against a Heat team that allowed 131 points in its opening game earlier this week.

Pistons vs Heat combo

  • Pistons -1.5
  • Under 235.5
  • Jalen Duren 20+ points

Pistons vs Heat player props

Pistons player prop: Cade Cunningham 40+ points + rebounds + assists

Cunningham does a bit of everything for the Pistons. Last season, he averaged 23.9 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.5 rebounds, for an average of 39.3 PRA. That was actually down slightly from the 2024-25 season, where his PRA average peaked at 41.3.

Cunningham only went 1-for-6 from three-point range on Tuesday, but still scored 22 points while dishing out eight assists. Against a Miami team that didn't look to have a clear defensive plan in its opener, he should be able to improve on both of those numbers.

I'm backing Cunningham to get 40+ PRA at up to 52%.

Heat player prop: Davion Mitchell 6+ assists

Davion Mitchell saw just how good it can be to play with Giannis on Wednesday, dishing out 11 assists in the Heat's season opener. While he probably won't keep producing assists at that rate, he averaged a career-high 6.5 assists per game last season, and I expect that number to increase with a superstar like Antetokounmpo in the lineup.

Miami played at the fastest pace in the NBA last season, and that has provided Mitchell with plenty of chances to get his assists totals up. I'm backing Mitchell to get 6+ assists tonight at up to 66%.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
