Astros vs Yankees Prediction, Picks & Odds — Friday, August 8

The Astros hold a significant pitching advantage with Hunter Brown toeing the rubber opposite Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler. With this game a borderline pick'em, Brown's superiority is enough for us to lean to the Houston ML.

The New York Yankees and Houston Astros begin a critical weekend series for each team in the Bronx.

The Yankees are fighting for their postseason lives after a horrid stretch, and the Astros are clinging to a divisional lead as the Seattle Mariners remain hot on their tails. My Astros vs Yankees predictions like Houston to get the first blow of the three-game set tonight.

I break it down here with my MLB picks on Friday, August 8.

Astros vs Yankees prediction

Astros vs Yankees best bet: Astros moneyline (-108 at FanDuel)

Well, here we are again with bettors running to the races to bet on the New York Yankees. The Houston Astros opened up as fairly strong -130 favorites and have moved 20 cents towards New York. Baffling.

Houston sends ace Hunter Brown to the mound as he continues a terrific season. The metrics are golden. It’s easier to talk about what he does best than what he does poorly. A particular issue for the Yankees in this matchup is the same one that has plagued them during their second-half slide: approach at the plate.

The Yankees are striking out at the third-highest clip in baseball, and if we removed the first month of the season, they would be standing alone in second.

More than that, though, are the peripherals surrounding those strikeouts: 26% whiff rate, third-lowest zone contact rate, and an increasingly lower chase contact rate, which are things Brown will exploit loudly given what he’s done this season.

My projections made the Astros around -145 favorites. They have a considerable advantage on the mound, and though neither of these teams has been great for the last month, Houston has certainly played better.

Astros vs Yankees same-game parlay (SGP)

Astros moneyline

Aaron Judge Over 1.5 total bases

Jose Altuve Over 1.5 total bases

Our same-game parlay has some chalk to it, but it’s a pretty simple explanation. Both starting pitchers throw the fastball at some of the highest clips among starters. Aaron Judge and Jose Altuve are the best players on their respective teams against the heater by any definable metric.
