Expert NHL moneyline picks: Oct. 28
Flyers vs Capitals pick:
Capitals
It's pretty simple: the Philadelphia Flyers are downright awful. They have a league-worst minus-17 goal differential and the second-worst expected goals-against mark, all while averaging just 1.93 goals per game. This Washington Capitals team has been serviceable this year, and has won three of its last four.
Oilers vs. Flames pick:
Oilers
While the Calgary Flames have come on recently, winning four straight games, I still don't see a path to victory here. The Edmonton Oilers rank first in goals per game (4.25), power-play percentage (35%), shooting percentage (16.6%), and are in the middle of the pack at limiting high-danger shots. The Flames, meanwhile, struggle to put the puck in the net, ranking 25th in expected goals for. If the Oilers stay out of the box, it's their game to lose.
Devils vs. Avalanche pick:
Avalanche
This is the most intriguing matchup on the board. Unfortunately for hockey lovers, we won't see Connor Hellebuyck tonight. He made his New Jersey Devils debut last night in a 5-1 win against the Dallas Stars. This means New Jersey is coming in off a travel day and is playing back-to-back nights, while the Colorado Avalanche haven't played since Sunday. I'll give the team that scores at the NHL's second-highest rate (4.08 goals per game) the benefit of the doubt.
Maple Leafs vs Kraken pick:
Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs will likely be without Kirill Marchenko tonight, but that doesn't change my outlook on this matchup. Special teams could be the difference-maker, and Toronto holds a significant advantage on both sides.
The Leafs rank fourth in expected goals on the power play and are converting at an impressive 28% clip, which spells trouble for the Seattle Kraken's 26th-ranked penalty kill. On the flip side, Toronto boasts the NHL's best penalty kill at a staggering 93.6%, giving the Leafs a clear edge.
Today's NHL moneyline combo
We're rolling with the favorites tonight, with lopsided matchups littering the board. Don't overthink it. These teams are either well-rested or facing some of the NHL's least productive offenses.
The nightcap featuring the Maple Leafs could be the difference-maker, but I love riding the special teams advantage. There's plenty to like about these matchups, and the 6.10x combo at Novig is as juicy as they come.
