Expert NHL moneyline picks: Oct. 29
Jets vs Lightning pick:
Lightning
The Winnipeg Jets enter this matchup ranked 24th in the NHL in expected goals and boast one of the league's worst penalty kills. That's a recipe for disaster against an offense averaging 3.45 goals per game, especially if Winnipeg struggles to stay out of the box.
Mammoth vs. Penguins pick:
Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth are a fantastic offensive team, and at this price you have to make this trade. With the No. 2 power-play unit in hockey propelling them to 3.62 goals per game, Utah might bludgeon Pittsburgh tonight. The Over in this game is a quality look, as well.
Blue Jackets vs. Hurricanes pick:
Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes might be the most sound hockey team right now. Early in the season, they rank third in goals per game, first in shots on goal, fourth in goals allowed, and first in shots allowed. Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets are dead last in expected goals. Don't overthink this one.
Blackhawks vs. Red Wings pick:
Blackhawks
We're going dumpster diving here between two of the worst teams in hockey, and if that's the case, I'm taking the value on the Chicago Blackhawks. The biggest edge for Chicago is in net, with Detroit's John Gibson owning a -4.2 goals saved above expected.
Islanders vs. Wild:
Wild
The Minnesota Wild, like Carolina, are also incredibly efficient on both ends of the ice, with their power play clicking at a 26% clip leading the way. The Islanders' stagnant offense won't be able to keep up.
Canadiens vs. Stars pick:
Stars
I love what the Montreal Canadiens bring to the table; the Stars are just a different animal, and the edge here is on defense. Dallas ranks first in goals allowed, second in shots on goal allowed, and owns the first-ranked penalty kill. They lull you to sleep, but they win.
Bruins vs. Blues pick:
Bruins
I hate fading Jeremy Swayman, who's playing on an entirely different level right now, and I'm not about to start. The Boston Bruins netminder ranks fifth in the NHL in goals saved above expected, anchoring a Boston defense that's allowed the second-fewest goals in hockey. With Swayman in this kind of form, there's plenty of reason to put your trust in Beantown.
Capitals vs. Predators pick:
Capitals
This is more about fading the Washington Capitals' schedule than anything else. The Capitals played at home last night and now have to travel to Nashville for the second half of a back-to-back, putting them at a clear rest disadvantage. The Nashville Predators own the third-best power play in hockey, which should help us cash this play.
Senators vs. Kings pick:
Senators
The Los Angeles Kings' defense is just abysmal, ranking 26th in goals allowed and 23rd in shots allowed, all while owning the league's worst penalty kill. Ottawa shouldn't have an issue with one of the bottom-10 teams in hockey.
Canucks vs. Sharks pick:
Sharks
No team in the NHL has surrendered more goals than the Vancouver Canucks, and the San Jose Sharks could be in for an feast. Vancouver's penalty kill has been equally disastrous, operating at a dreadful 63% clip. If San Jose can generate a few power-play opportunities, this could get ugly.
Sabres vs. Ducks pick:
Ducks
These two teams have a ton of similarities: each own a high-powered offense, and both hate to play sound puck in their own end. In a game that could end 6-5, I'm investing in the team that's going to give us a higher return. "Bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it plays out for him."
Today's NHL moneyline combo
Tonight's combo features three favorable matchups with some of the most appealing prices on the slate. The Mammoth and Sharks boast two of the NHL's most potent offenses, while the Wild have a favorable matchup against the Islanders. It's a compelling mix of offensive firepower, teams that play strong, 200-foot hockey, and value across all three games.
