The Norris Trophy odds for the 2026-27 season have hit the board, and a pair of Western Conference and Olympic rivals lead the way early on.

Cale Makar is the summer favorite at +300, while Olympic gold medal winner Quinn Hughes is close behind at +400. Defending Norris Trophy winner Zach Werenski sits at +550.

Odds movement

7/13: No surprises at the very top of this list, but Schaefer's +2000 opening will almost certainly welcome plenty of debate. Some will see the odds as too high, while others will wonder why he isn't inside the top five. I have thoughts.

Norris Trophy prediction

My way-too-early Norris prediction is ... the guy I was just talking about, Matthew Schaefer. He has extended stretches of dominance as a teenager en route to a runaway win as the Calder Trophy odds favorite for most of the 2025-26 season, and as Werenski proved last year, you don't have to play for a top-three team to win this award. I'm sprinkling a half-unit to kick off my Norris Trophy betting ledger.

Understanding NHL Norris odds

Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. When the regular season is nearly finished and a consensus has emerged, you might see a player with a minus sign (-) ahead of his odds, like this:

  • Cale Makar -115

The (-) means that Makar is the odds-on favorite, and a bettor would need to wager $135 to win $100. Other contenders in the Norris race might have plus (+) odds to win.

  • Quinn Hughes +200

Here, a bettor stood to profit $200 for every $100 wagered.

If American odds aren't your thing, simply use a tool like our odds converter to switch the odds to decimal or fractional format. Most online sportsbooks also give you the option to change the odds format that you see.

Popular NHL futures markets

  • No player has won consecutive Norris Trophies since Detroit Red Wings Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom captured three straight from 2006-08.
  • The Boston Bruins have the most Norris Trophy wins as a team with 14, followed closely by the Montreal Canadiens with 12.
  • Erik Karlsson (three) and Cale Makar (two) are the only active defensemen with multiple Norris Trophies to their credit.
  • Makar is one of only three players in the 21st Century to win a Norris Trophy and a Stanley Cup in the same season.
