Julius Randle's arrival will be key in the Nets beating the Hornets tonight.

The Brooklyn Nets begin their season at home tonight as a 2.5-point favorite against the new-look Charlotte Hornets, with tip-off from the Barclays Center scheduled for 7:30 p.m ET.

My Hornets vs Nets prediction is Brooklyn's offseason acquisitions will play a major part in the home side covering this one-bucket spread.

Find out more in my NBA picks for Wednesday, Oct. 21.

 TOP PICK
Hornets vs Nets prediction: Nets -1.5

Play up to 55%.

The Charlotte Hornets made the Play-In last season, but traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges this summer, losing two key offensive pieces.

Charlotte's offensive rating was 12.9 points higher per 100 possessions with Ball on the floor last season, highlighting his importance.

The Hornets added veterans, but they'll be without Kon Knueppel, Coby White, and Grant Williams tonight, leaving them thin on scoring and depth.

The Brooklyn Nets, meanwhile, added Julius Randle alongside Michael Porter Jr. Randle averaged 4.8 assists in the preseason, and his playmaking should help create better looks for MPJ.

With Charlotte shorthanded and Brooklyn boasting two proven scoring threats, I like the Nets to cover at home.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Brooklyn's starting lineup averaged a remarkable 140 points per 100 possessions in 38 preseason minutes. Even with the small sample, that offensive upside supports the Nets here.

Hornets vs Nets combo

I'm combining a Nets victory with a low-scoring affair and a solid playmaking performance from Randle.

Charlotte ranked 29th in offensive rating (97.7) in the preseason while committing a league-worst 23.5 turnovers per 100 possessions.

That's a concerning trend for a team still adjusting to life without its former floor general. Brooklyn has improved offensively, but I don't expect Charlotte to contribute enough scoring to push this contest Over 218.5 points.

Randle averaged 5.0 dimes per night last season, and he'll have an even larger playmaking role on the Nets. He showed off his facilitating abilities in the preseason, and Randle showed impressive chemistry with Porter Jr, assisting eight of his 23 made field goals.

  • Julius Randle Over 4.5 assists

Hornets vs Nets player props

Hornets player prop: Brandon Miller Over 24.5 points

Play up to 53%.

With Ball and Bridges gone, Brandon Miller will become the Hornets' No. 1 offensive option. The former Alabama standout averaged 20.2 points per game last season, but I'm eyeing him to erupt for 25+ tonight.

In three games without Ball last season, Miller averaged 21.3 field-goal attempts, compared to 15.8 when they shared the floor. With Knueppel and White also sidelined, I expect a heavy offensive workload.

Brooklyn ranked second-worst in opponent effective field-goal percentage during the preseason, and Miller scored exactly 25 points in both meetings with the Nets last season.

Nets player prop: Michael Porter Jr. Over 24.5 points

Play up to 45%.

Michael Porter Jr. had a career year last season, averaging 24.2 ppg, six more than in 2024-25. He'll remain one of Brooklyn's best scoring options, and I'm backing him to start strong at home.

The sharpshooter should benefit from Randle's arrival. Just 9% of MPJ's 3-point attempts were wide open last season, but Randle's playmaking and ability to collapse defenses should create cleaner looks.

Porter also averaged 25.2 ppg at home in 2025-26, up from 23.3 on the road, and he erupted for 35 points against Charlotte in their last meeting.
