Calgary has been heating up since losing its first five games of the season, and the hosts look like a fruitful underdog pick in my Flyers vs. Flames predictions.
I'll break down why I'm taking the hosts in my NHL picks for Sunday, Nov. 8.
TOP PICK
Flyers vs Flames prediction: Flames moneyline
I'm playing Calgary up to 53% tonight.
After going 0-5-0 to start the campaign, the Calgary Flames have actually been a respectable hockey team.
They're 7-4-1 since then (5-1-0 at home), while their .625 points percentage is 12th in the NHL, right behind Cup contenders like the Panthers and Golden Knights.
For a rebuilding team, Calgary has done a great job of controlling play. The Flames rank 10th in both shot attempt share (51.04%) and expected goals (52.58%) at 5-on-5.
The same can't be said of the Philadelphia Flyers, who are getting caved in on a nightly basis. Philly sits 28th in expected goals (44.31%) and 29th in shot share (45.07%).

Flyers vs Flames combo
Devin Cooley returns to the Flames crease and could be in for a busy night. Calgary has allowed 27+ shots on net in 15 of 17 games this season, though Cooley's been up to the task. He owns an excellent .914 SV% while surrendering two goals or fewer in each of his last five starts.
On the offensive side of the puck, Joel Farabee is in the midst of a breakout campaign with Calgary. Farabee leads the Flames with 16 points and has found the score sheet in six straight home games, while the Flyers have given up 4.00 goals per game over their last six contests.
Flyers vs Flames combo
- Flames moneyline
- Devin Cooley 24+ saves
- Joel Farabee 1+ points
Flyers vs Flames player prop: Devin Cooley 24+ saves
Cooley is a major reason why the Flames are looking like a respectable team again, and Calgary will be very happy to have him back after he missed four games with a lower-body injury.
Excluding the game he left early due to injury, Cooley has made 24+ saves in each of his last four outings while also earning the win each time.
Philadelphia has recorded 25+ shots in six of its last seven contests, averaging 26.7 shots over that span. That should be enough work for Cooley to make 24 stops.
Flyers vs Flames goal scorer: Joel Farabee
Farabee has been the main guy up front for the Flames, leading all forwards in ice time (18:56), shots (41), and goals (6).
The former Flyers draft pick has scored all six of his goals in the past two and a half weeks, finding the back of the net in six of his last nine outings.
The Flyers own one of the worst defenses in the NHL since Oct. 24, allowing 4.00 goals per game, while their penalty kill is operating at just 72.2% (20th).
The Flames have been red-hot on the power play over that span (35.3%; 4th), and that's where Farabee has sniped two of his goals.
