Houston’s defense should control the game, but California’s shooting gives the Golden Bears enough margin to stay inside the number, per our college basketball expert.

My top Houston vs. California prediction is calling for a rock fight in the Lake Tahoe Classic between Houston and California today.

Who will win Houston vs California: California +19.5

I'm playing the California Bears +19.5 at 54% or less.

I'm fairly optimistic about this team coming into 2026 and slightly less bullish on the Houston Cougars than the market coming into the year. It's still Kelvin Sampson, hell-in-the-cell type defense and one of the best teams in the country, but I'm curious about the overall talent level of this group relative to past seasons.

The Cougars are projected to use the mid-range on nearly 35% of their shots (per usual), while California is projected at only 23%, meaning Houston should control the game with physical defense and efficient interior play rather than constant transition.

That supports a Houston win, but not necessarily a runaway. My model makes this closer to Houston by 18, creating enough room for the Bears to cover.

TOP PICK
Houston vs California Over/Under pick: Under 146.5

Play to 145.5.

Houston's offense should be efficient enough to score, but its shot profile is built around controlling possessions and forcing opponents to execute against a set defense. California's projected three-point volume is high, but Houston's pressure can make those attempts more difficult and create empty possessions before the Bears get into their preferred actions.

The first two California games produced a combined 199 points per game, but those came against Adams State and Radford. Houston held La Salle to 55 points and forced 26 turnovers, which is a much more relevant defensive test.

California can contribute enough offense to stay competitive, but Houston's ability to suppress efficiency keeps this closer to the mid-140s than a shootout.

Covers COVERS INTEL: California ranks in the top 45th percentile defensively against inside-out attacks and post-ups. These are two of Houston's primary half-court offenses; slowing them down could go a long way toward keeping this low-scoring.

Houston vs California combo

This combination reflects the most likely shape of the game: Houston wins, but California stays within the full-game spread because its shooting gives it a path to late-game points.

The Cougs' defensive pressure should matter more early, when they can disrupt Cal's offense before the Golden Bears settle into their perimeter rhythm. I expect Houston to control this game throughout, with California still covering through shot-making and late-game possessions.
