The Lakers could be without their superstar leader on the road in the Motor City tonight. No matter his status, our NBA expert still likes the home Pistons to handle their business.

The questionable status of Luka Doncic (back) has my Lakers vs. Pistons prediction leaning heavily toward a Detroit team that's coming off just its second loss of the season.

Los Angeles enters Sunday's matchup as an underdog for the second time, this time at +4.5, for a 6 p.m. ET start at Little Caesars Arena. Let's dive into my analysis and NBA picks for Sunday, Nov. 8.

TOP PICK
Lakers vs Pistons prediction: Pistons -4.5

Play up to 60%.

It goes without saying that Luka Doncic is the backbone of everything the Los Angeles Lakers do on the hardwood. He just became the fourth player in franchise history to score 40+ points in four straight games, and the team's net rating nosedives by a ridiculous 40.1 points (20.7 to -19.4) whenever he sits.

The early spread is a clear reflection of Doncic's potential absence, as L.A. is tied for the best overall record on the back of a four-game winning streak. Sunday's game kicks off a four-game road trip, with the Lakers back at it again Monday, so that's important to take into account.

The Detroit Pistons will be a challenge regardless. Their defense sits first overall by a 5.1-point margin (100.5 points allowed per 100 possessions) over the last six games, and that's come with Jalen Duren (hamstring) sidelined.

Without Doncic, the Lakers are unrecognizable, unreliable, and can't be trusted to penetrate a robust Pistons defense consistently for 48 minutes.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Pistons are 5-1 straight up and against the spread this season when entering as a favorite. The Lakers haven't won or covered on the road in Detroit since Feb. 13, 2024.

Lakers vs Pistons combo

All projections come with the assumption that Doncic will either be held out or play limited minutes with the Lakers on the first night of a back-to-back slate. Detroit has home-court advantage anyway, and has proven capable of dominating opponents sans Duren.

Doncic's usage rate is on pace to be the highest in league history. So many other players rely on his offensive repertoire to generate points themselves. It's difficult to imagine the visitors even reaching triple digits on the scoreboard without him, if that's in fact the case.

Duncan Robinson is averaging 22.7 points over his last three appearances for the Pistons, shooting a blistering 55.9% from 3-point range with five makes per contest.

Lakers vs Pistons player props

Lakers player prop: Jake LaRavia Over 3.5 rebounds

Play up to 55%.

Again, a lot of these projections hinge on Doncic ultimately resting. He fills up the stat sheet in so many ways that him not playing would force head coach JJ Redick to rely on his depth and see who is prepared to step up.

Jake LaRavia is by no means someone notorious for posting huge numbers, but he's still a starter on a team that may need some extra production on Sunday. He's averaging 3.9 rebounds on 8.2 potential boards through nine appearances, and has grabbed four or more in two of the last three games.

The Pistons don't have Duren in the middle crashing the boards, ranking in the bottom third of the Association in opponents' rebounds without him at 45.5. That alone should result in one or two extra opportunities falling LaRavia's way.

Pistons player prop: Paul Reed Under 13.5 points

Play up to 65%.

Paul Reed has done an admirable job holding down the fort at center in Duren's stead, producing 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds across six starts.

His scoring prop is set at 13.5 points for Sunday, though, and that's just a smidge too high. He's gone Under that number in each of the last three games.

To make matters worse, Reed and his 6-foot-9 frame will be standing across from a 7-foot-2 giant in Walker Kessler on Sunday. Being undersized at the five will be an issue in this particular matchup, and that should keep Reed's scoring in check.
