The Washington Capitals continue their homestand with a matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

My Flyers vs. Capitals predictions expect Washington to take care of business at home in my best NHL picks for Thursday, March 20.

Flyers vs Capitals prediction

My best bet: Capitals -1.5 (+105 at DraftKings)

My analysis
This is a matchup between two teams heading in opposite directions. The Washington Capitals are 7-1-0 in their last eight games compared to the Philadelphia Flyers, who are 1-7-0 since March 4.

Not only have the Capitals been winning while the Flyers are losing, but both teams haven’t played many one-goal games either. Washington has a +14 goal differential during that stretch compared to Philadelphia's ugly -20 mark.

All seven of the Flyers’ losses during this stretch have come by at least two goals, including five games by 3+ goals. Washington's last five victories have covered this 1.5-goal spread, including three straight wins by 3+ goals.

And it’s not just the results on the scoreboard. The Capitals are in the Top 10 in terms of expected goals share at 5-on-5 in the last 10 games, while the Flyers are in the bottom third. Add in great goaltending for Washington and league-worst goaltending for Philadelphia, and we could see a blowout in D.C. tonight.

Flyers vs Capitals same-game parlay (SGP)

Capitals -1.5

Alex Ovechkin anytime goalscorer

Alex Ovechkin 4+ shots

Alex Ovechkin is closing in on Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record, and he should have ample opportunity to score tonight. The Lightning only scored two goals (one empty-netter) against the Flyers last time out, but Philadelphia has allowed 4+ goals in five of their last eight games.

Ovechkin didn’t score last game and only took one shot on goal. Look for him to pile up the shots and find the back of the net at least once against a flailing Flyers squad.
