Clemson was embarrassed on the big stage once by LSU, and this isn't a program in ascent, so our predictions see Miami covering this large spread in a blowout.

No. 4 Miami (86%) heads to Death Valley to duel with Clemson (14%) in Week 5, and my Miami vs. Clemson prediction sees the road favorite rolling given its significant advantages in the trenches.

Read my college football picks below to see why I'm also on the Under and a Miami team-total prop when things get underway at 7:30 pm ET from Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Miami vs Clemson: Miami -16.5

I'd lay the points with the Miami Hurricanes up to -17.5.

The Clemson Tigers didn't belong on the field in their lone step up in competition, falling 51-10 to LSU. Miami is the real deal, outgaining opponents by 4.5 yards per play, so a similarly lopsided result is likely in store on Saturday.

The Tigers have no verve on offense, ranking 133rd in success rate. An offensive line ranking 136th in front-seven havoc will be in deep water against Miami's disruptive defensive front (third in PFF's pass-rush grade).

The Hurricanes will score plenty, creating margin along the way.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Miami has a massive edge in the trenches, ranking seventh in offensive line yards (Clemson 117th) and second in defensive stuff rate (Clemson 130th).

Miami vs Clemson Over/Under pick: Under 46.5

One can't trust Clemson's offense to score many points in any matchup, let alone against Miami. The Tigers check in at 131st in EPA per play on standard downs, so they'll be behind the chains and will get wrecked by the Hurricanes' pass rush on third downs.

There's a 71% chance of rain, so the forecast isn't smiling upon a hallmark offensive performance. That could slow down Miami's national-leading passing attack (0.84 EPA per pass), at least enough to keep the total down.

Miami can still have success on the ground (6.3 yards per carry), but Clemson likely won't (127th in rushing success rate).

Miami vs Clemson combo

Clemson isn't new to slow starts, averaging 21 total points in the first half of its last three games.

What starts as a sludgefest in a rainy game will open into a Miami rout after the Hurricanes acclimate to the weather and the environment and let the trenches do the talking.
