This isn't the same dominant Indiana team we saw in 2025, and that means a relatively closer, low scoring game is on tap against Rutgers.

The Indiana Hoosiers (-24.5) look to improve to 5-0 when they visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Saturday night.

Indiana hasn’t dominated opponents quite like it did in 2025, so my Indiana vs. Rutgers prediction backs the Under and the Scarlet Knights to cover the spread.

Keep reading to see all my free college football picks for Saturday, Oct. 3.

Who will win Indiana vs Rutgers today? Pick: Rutgers +24.5

There's no doubt the Indiana Hoosiers will win this game, but plenty of signs suggest it won't be a blowout. Indiana has yet to cover in its first four games this season, while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights — despite a 1-3 record — have yet to lose by more than 16 points.

The Hoosiers' offense is what concerns me about Indiana's chances to cover. The Northwestern Wildcats held them to 29 points last week, while the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers gave up only 38 to the Hoosiers the week before.

Despite solid efficiency numbers, Indiana isn't putting up the points I'd expect, and Rutgers is scoring enough (33.8 ppg) to keep this one reasonably close at home. I'm backing Rutgers to cover at +21.5 or more.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Indiana's adjusted EPA per play of +0.31 (11th in the nation) is down significantly from their national best +0.51 figure last year, showing the Hoosiers aren't nearly as dominant as they were in 2025.

 TOP PICK
Indiana vs Rutgers Over/Under pick: Under 56.5

While Indiana put up big numbers in their first two games, offensive production has dropped significantly over the past two weeks. The Hoosiers have now played three straight weeks in which they've posted totals of 55 or less.

Rutgers has played some wilder games this season, but I don't expect to see that at home this week. Indiana has allowed just 4.0 yards per play so far in 2026, and only 2.7 yards per rushing attempt against FBS opponents. The Scarlet Knights won't score much against an Indiana squad allowing 9.8 ppg.

I'm backing the Under at totals of 54.5 or higher.

Indiana vs Rutgers combo

Combining a Rutgers cover with the Under makes sense; the fewer total points, the less chance Indiana has of turning this game into a blowout.

For my third leg, I'm going to take Indiana to cover the first-quarter spread. The -6.5 number makes it reasonably likely the Hoosiers can cover with an early touchdown.

And because this is negatively correlated to Rutgers covering overall, we can get a great price on this combo.

Indiana vs Rutgers combo

  • Rutgers +24.5
  • Under 56.5
  • Indiana -6.5 1Q

Indiana vs Rutgers prop: Indiana Under 39.5 points (50%)

The Rutgers defense has looked far from amazing this year, but Indiana has already struggled to put up points against other mediocre FBS defensive units.

Western Kentucky ranks 132nd of 138 teams nationally in defensive EPA (0.33 per play), and the Hoosiers still only put up 38 points against them.

Rutgers fares slightly better in advanced defensive metrics (110th in defensive EPA, 0.21 per play), and has the benefit of playing at home. I like the Under on Indiana's total down to 38.5 points.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
