Familiarity beats freshman hype as Virginia’s veterans take on John Calipari’s young Razorbacks.

John Calipari has loaded up on another class of blue-chip freshmen, but my Arkansas vs. Virginia prediction says experience wins out this afternoon.

The Razorbacks bring plenty of upside and NBA aspirations, while the Cavaliers retained a veteran group that believes in Ryan Odom's system. Early in the season, that familiarity matters, which is why my college basketball picks have Virginia handing Arkansas an L.

TOP PICK
Who will win Arkansas vs Virginia: Virginia moneyline

Early on in the year, backing the team with more familiarity is the way to go, especially when Arkansas has a roster peppered with eight freshmen. We all know Arkansas head coach John Calipari loves his blue-chip recruits. However, with Virginia returning three starters from a year ago who know Ryan Odom's system, the Cavaliers have a massive advantage.

The Cavaliers will be led by sophomore forward Thijs De Ridder, who kicked off the season averaging 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 66.7% from the floor. Sure, it has come against nobodies, but he's out of the gate humming. Last season, he averaged 15.6 PPG and 6.2 RPG.

In the first month of the season, when teams are still working out the kinks and learning their systems, the team with more veteran leadership and familiarity has the advantage in today's game.

Take this up to 62% at most, or find Virginia -2.5.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Ryan Odom should be looking to slow this game down from the start. The Razorbacks love to run, and that simply isn't the Cavaliers' style. Haslametrics ranks Virginia as the 106th-slowest team in the country, while Arkansas checks in as the 18th-fastest. Slow the game down, control the tempo, and make this inexperienced Arkansas team uncomfortable.

Arkansas vs Virginia Over/Under pick: Under 162.5

If you like the Cavaliers to come out on top, it feels right to bank on a lower-scoring affair. If you like the Razorbacks, the Over may be the play, but Odom runs a strict, defense-minded team. He wants his guys to strangle the opposition on the defensive end.

Virginia has become a much better scoring team since Odom came aboard, but getting Over 162.5 points feels like too much to ask. The more veteran group should be able to slow down the much faster, younger squad.

Take this down to 160.5.

Arkansas vs Virginia combo

Backing the veteran team that has been around the Odom system longer than most guys have been in the Coach Cal system is the way to attack this ball game. Pairing Virginia to come out on top with the Under 162.5 gets you a delectable 2.93x payout.
