The Tampa Bay Rays host the Baltimore Orioles in a battle between two AL East teams coming off impressive sweeps.
My Orioles vs. Rays predictions expect the offenses to remain front and center in the series opener, focusing particularly on Tampa infielder, Jonathan Aranda.
Let’s break it all down with my MLB picks for June 16.
Orioles vs Rays prediction
My Orioles vs Rays best bet: Jonathan Aranda Over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI (-120 at Caesars)
Baltimore Orioles starter Zach Eflin has struggled to slow down left-handed bats this season. He’s allowed a .261 average, .820 OPS, and an 11.8% barrel rate — all below average metrics.
Eflin has also conceded 10 homers, eight of which to lefties. They’re not just barreling up on balls more frequently; they’re seeing noticeable spikes in production as well.
Eflin owns a 4.80 ERA over the last month, and the underlying numbers indicate things could be even worse. He owns a 5.51 FIP in that span, third worst among all of the day’s projected starting pitchers.
Jonathan Aranda is a prime candidate to take advantage of Eflin’s struggles, as the infielder is sporting an impressive .327 average against right-handed pitchers.
As you’d expect, that’s led to plenty of success in the hits+runs+RBI market. Aranda has cleared this line in 32 of 50 games against RHPs (64%), averaging 2.6 H+R+RBI along the way.
His numbers go from great to exceptional when isolating home games against righties, with him generating 3 H+R+RBI per game and exceeding this line in 22 of 27 games, an 81% hit rate.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Orioles vs Rays same-game parlay (SGP)
Jordan Westburg is heating up at the dish. He has recorded multiple H+R+RBI in eight of his last 12 games, including four of five since returning to the Orioles lineup.
The Orioles have batted Westburg fifth or higher in four of the last five games, and he’s responded with big-time production.
He has a nice matchup to build on his strong form Monday night. Ryan Pepiot has allowed a .266 average to right-handed bats this season, and his underlying metrics are drastically worse vs. righties across the board.
The Orioles have a lot of left-handed bats and switch-hitters, so Westburg is a weapon they really need in this matchup.
Westburg has hit .256 against right-handed pitching (compared to .212 against southpaws) and smashed the ball since getting healthy again.
Lastly, we’re projecting a high-scoring game in Tampa Bay. The Orioles have disappointed this season but are showing signs of improvement offensively, ranking fourth in batting average against right-handed pitching in June.
On the flip side, Eflin is struggling and has a particularly difficult time against left-handed bats. That plays into the hands of the Rays, who roster several dangerous lefties in Aranda, Brandon Lowe, and Josh Lowe.
