Canada is favored over Qatar, but Group B pressure and attacking concerns point toward a tense, low-scoring World Cup clash at BC Place.

Canada enters Thursday's Group B showdown with Qatar as the favorite, but my Canada vs. Qatar predictions expect a tense, low-scoring affair between two teams that can ill afford a defeat.

The Canadians are still searching for answers in the final third after a frustrating draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Qatar's surprise point against Switzerland has suddenly put the visitors in position to play for another result. With knockout-round implications already looming and both teams built around defensive discipline, I'm expecting goals to be hard to come by at BC Place.

Read on for my World Cup picks for Thursday, June 18, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on TSN and FS1.

Who will win Canada vs Qatar: Qatar +1.5 (+101)

Canada is the more talented side on paper and should win, but I think the market may be underestimating how important this result is for Qatar.

After earning an unexpected point against Switzerland, the Qataris suddenly find themselves with a realistic path to the knockout stage. A victory here would put them in a tremendous position heading into Matchday 3, while even another draw would keep their hopes alive.

That incentive should produce the type of disciplined performance Qatar has built its identity around. The visitors are comfortable defending deep, staying organized, and turning matches into physical, low-event affairs. While Qatar is winless in its last seven matches, only one of those defeats came by multiple goals.

That's important against a Canadian side that still has questions to answer in the final third. Jesse Marsch's team struggled to create consistent chances against Bosnia and Herzegovina until the match opened up late, and confidence in front of goal remains a concern.

With both teams knowing a loss would seriously damage their knockout-round ambitions, I expect a competitive match that stays within one goal.

Qatar +1.5 is playable up to -135.

 TOp pick

Canada vs Qatar Over/Under pick: Under 2.5 (+109)

Goals have been hard to come by for both teams lately, which is why I'm backing Under 2.5 goals in this Group B matchup.

Canada's biggest attacking strength is its ability to transition quickly into open space, but Qatar is unlikely to give Jesse Marsch's side those opportunities. Expect the visitors to defend with numbers behind the ball and force Canada to break them down in settled possession.

Jesse Marsch's side looked laboured for long stretches in its tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada didn't truly threaten Bosnia until the match became stretched in the second half. That's unlikely to happen here, as Qatar will happily concede possession and turn this into a slow, territorial battle.

Qatar showed against Switzerland that it is comfortable spending long stretches without the ball, and after stealing a valuable point in its opener, there's little incentive to make this match more open than it needs to be.

With both teams knowing a defeat would seriously damage their chances of reaching the knockout stage, I expect a cautious, low-event affair.

I'd play Under 2.5 goals up to -130.
