The Central Florida Knights fancy themselves college football’s rightful National Champions after capping their perfect 13-0 season by downing the Auburn Tigers 34-27 in the Peach Bowl.
By winning outright as 10.5-point underdogs against Auburn, the Knights defeated the one team that beat both Alabama and Georgia - the two national title finalist - during the regular season. That’s why people like ESPN’s Dan Le Batard are pushing Central Florida as the rightful college football champion.
Central Florida athletic director Danny White said there will be a parade held in Orlando to celebrate and the school will be paying out National Championship bonuses to outgoing head coach Scott Frost and his staff for their efforts this season. The official school’s football twitter account is having fun too.
If everyone is having fun with Central Florida and its campaign for a championship nod, Covers figured it would get in on the good times the best way we know how: set odds on a fictional National Championship decider between UCF and the two SEC teams contending in the CFP Championship Monday night.
And, according to the oddsmakers we polled on these pretend matchups, they would still make Alabama and Georgia heavy favorites against UCF despite its undefeated record and impressive win over the Tigers. We talked to Golden Nugget sportsbook director Tony Miller, Westgate SuperBook assistant manager Ed Salmons and Sportsbook.ag oddsmaker Peter Childs to figure out how big of an underdog Central Florida would be if it was playing against either the Crimson Tide or Bulldogs in the National Championship game.
“Double digits on both,” Childs told Covers. “Yes, UCF beat Auburn and looked good doing it, but I’m not convinced Auburn was all that up for the game and gave their best effort.”
