Ian Book led the Fighting Irish in not only passing but rushing in their win over Boston College, continuing the heroics that have him remaining a dark-horse Heisman candidate.

Before I got into college football betting, I covered current North Carolina Head Coach Mack Brown at Texas, and he had a habit of beginning his sentences with the phrase, “You know…” Except that when Coach Brown uttered the phrase, it sounded like “Juneau.”

So the joke among the local media was: “Hey Coach, what’s the capital of Alaska?”

“Juneau.”

Eventually, Mack must have gotten word of what was happening because he stopped introducing his thoughts that way, but what a run it was!

Let’s check out our best college football free picks and predictions for No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 23 North Carolina, with kickoff set for Friday, November 27 at 3:30 p.m. ET, far away from The Last Frontier in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

The Fighting Irish continue their push for that elusive national title, and they’re coming off a strong 45-31 win over Boston College that certainly fell into the category of “letdown spot.” Quarterback Ian Book has become a bigger factor for the Notre Dame offense as the season has progressed, and he led the team in both passing and rushing against the rival Eagles. The Irish defense has been salty for most of the season, allowing 16.1 points per game.

It’s hard to know what to expect from North Carolina, though the Heels are certainly never out of any contest with their explosive offense. UNC rallied for an incredible 59-53 victory against Wake Forest two weeks ago, in which they outscored the Demon Deacons 28-8 in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Sam Howell put up monster numbers, going 32-45 for 550 yards and six touchdowns with only one interception. But can the Heels stop anyone? They allow 30.4 points per game, and it’s not as if Wake Forest is an offensive juggernaut.

This line opened with the Heels getting more than a touchdown, and bettors immediately jumped on the home dog. Now you can lay 4.5 points with Notre Dame, and you’re getting value with a team that should be able to slow down Carolina enough to cover the number. Notre Dame is 5-0 ATS in its last five games.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame -4.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

It’s hard to bet any Under when the Heels are involved. As we saw against the Demon Deacons, North Carolina can put up points in a hurry, which is generally a product of the Heels defense putting the team in a hole. In other words, don’t be surprised if we get another shootout in Chapel Hill. The Over is 4-0 in North Carolina’s last four games.

PREDICTION: Over 66.0 (-110)

Team Total Prop Pick

Mack certainly knows the capital of Alaska, but he still hasn’t proven that he knows how to field a good defense. The Tar Heels give up 5.70 yards per play while the Irish give up 4.88.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame team total Over 34.5 (-118)
