Oregon State's new-look offense seemed to look the part in Week 1, and now the Beavers have a chance to prove they're for real on that side of the ball as they host Texas Tech in a cross-country trip for the playoff hopefuls.

Texas Tech (94% favorite) takes another step toward a second consecutive College Football Playoff appearance as my Texas Tech vs. Oregon State prediction breaks down its visit to Oregon State (6%) at Reser Stadium in Week 2.

My college football picks see this Beavers offense as an undervalued asset, led by quarterback Braden Atkinson's stellar debut.

Looking to tune in? The game will be televised on CBS at 7:30 pm ET on Saturday, Sept. 12.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Texas Tech vs Oregon State: Oregon State +27.5

Oregon State has the advantage of a brand-new coaching staff, so opposing staffs have little prior film to study in preparation. Head coach JaMarcas Shephard said that his team will run little, if any, of what it did against Houston when it racked up 402 total yards.

This contrasts with Texas Tech, which sputtered to an unconvincing 33-10 win over Abilene Christian in which a clear blueprint was established to limit the Red Raiders’ offense.

Oregon State would be wise to put an extra safety in the box given Tech’s mediocre offensive line (73rd in front seven havoc allowed) and lack of an established passing attack. ACU implemented this approach, and Tech was held out of the end zone from 2:22 left in the first quarter to 2:45 left in the fourth

The Beavers may have hit at quarterback. Braden Atkinson won the Jerry Rice Award as the FCS’ best freshman a year ago for good reason and threw for 376 yards against Houston, and he’ll keep the back door cover within range.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Braden Atkinson's 376 yards passing ranked fifth among quarterbacks facing an FBS opponent in Week 1.

Texas Tech vs Oregon State Over/Under pick: Over 53.5

Oregon State did not look sound defensively against Houston, recording just one sack and allowing 533 total yards on 7.4 yards per play. They were gashed on the ground, surrendering 228 yards and three touchdowns, so one hesitates to consider the damage Texas Tech will inflict.

Tech's three-headed running back monster of Cameron Dickey, J'Koby Williams, and Quinten Joyner is as good as any in the country, and it should rack up plenty of production even if slowed by an extra safety in the box.

The Red Raiders were dominant defensively a year ago but figure to take a step back after losing their best two players (David Bailey, Jacob Rodriguez) and four of their top six. Oregon State was able to dial up some explosives with Atkinson and his receivers, mainly freshman Jesse Legree (136 yards), and stand to pop some big plays again.

Tempo figures to play a factor as Oregon State had the 19th-highest snaps per minute (2.5) in Week 1, and Texas Tech ranked 21st-fastest (2.44) a year ago and didn't change scheme or coordinator.

Texas Tech vs Oregon State combo

This will be one of the highest-tempo matchups of Week 2. Both offenses operate with a hurry, and that should lead to points even if efficiency isn't at an all-time high.

The Beavers hold an advantage with an entirely new coaching staff and offensive playbook. That's difficult to prepare for, especially when accompanied by a competent starting quarterback.
