Our college hoops expert expects Auburn to get off to a much better start than it did in its season opener a year ago. The expectations are high for the Tigers heading into the 2026-27 campaign.

The second year under Steven Pearl should be much better for die-hard Auburn fans, especially after a first season that didn't go quite as planned. Pearl now has his guys in place and should be ready to take the next step, and it all starts with Southeastern Louisiana tonight.

My Southeastern Louisiana vs. Auburn prediction and college basketball picks envision the Tigers cruising early.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Southeastern Louisiana vs Auburn: Auburn -29.5

The Auburn Tigers haven't looked quite as good as they did under Bruce Pearl. But in Year 2 of the Steven Pearl era, this team should take a step forward under its new regime.

Pearl returns two starters from a year ago: junior guard Tahaad Pettiford, who averaged 15.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, and senior guard Kevin Overton, who posted 14.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per outing. That's a lot of scoring power and familiarity returning to this roster.

Auburn also brought in Thomas Dowd from Troy, who averaged 14.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per outing. He'll fit Pearl's system nicely and bring a winning mentality to this program.

Southeastern Louisiana returns zero starters and just one reserve, who averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. The rest of the Lions' roster is brand new.

The number typically isn't high enough early in the year when top-50 teams face bottom-100 opponents. The Tigers are playable up to -30.

Covers COVERS INTEL: In Game 1 of the Steven Pearl era last season, Auburn needed overtime to get past Bethune-Cookman. The Tigers snuck out with a 95-90 win, despite the Wildcats finishing with a higher field-goal percentage, 3-point percentage, and free-throw percentage. Pearl surely has had this one pinned to the bulletin board all offseason.

Southeastern Louisiana vs Auburn Over/Under: Under 151.5

I'd lean more toward the Tigers' team total Over. However, the Tigers should be able to keep this Lions offense in check.

Southeastern Louisiana's team total is sitting around 62.5 this evening, and it's hard to see the Lions getting over 60 points, especially when you consider the pace of this game. It shouldn't be particularly fast, but rather more moderate, as the Tigers rank around the middle of the pack in pace. Bart Torvik has them in the 190s, compared to 117th in possessions per game last season.

I expect Pearl to stick with a similar style of play, and the Lions shouldn't endure any issues with that either, as they prefer to play at a slower pace.

Playable down to 149.5.
