The Warriors and Lakers enter the season with retooled offenses but similar strategies. Jason Logan sees value in these opening game NBA odds, expecting these Western rivals to pick up the pace.

The “Luka Lakers” make their debut when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State Warriors tonight at Crytpo.com Arena as 6.5-point favorites.

Luka Doncic is the main attraction in La-La Land after LeBron James pulled a reverse “Fresh Prince,” and my Warriors vs. Lakers prediction is that points will come in bunches.

Find out more in my NBA picks for Oct. 21.

 TOP PICK
Warriors vs Lakers prediction: Over 233.5

The LeBron-less Los Angeles Lakers are shaking up their offensive approach.

Head coach J.J. Redick wants to inject more tempo into this stagnant attack after finishing No. 22 in pace rating last year.

He’s utilizing star Luka Doncic in more off-ball schemes to keep the offense flowing and no longer has James pumping the brakes as a ball-dominant presence.

The preseason showed flashes of this uptick, along with a focus on pushing transition, something L.A. had gotten away from since acquiring Doncic.

As for the Golden State Warriors, the legs of veterans like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Al Horford are never fresher than on opening night.

Steve Kerr has also overhauled his offense, with a revamped five-out stressing space and aggressive 3-point shooting.

The Dubs were clicking in their preseason finale, burying 18 3-pointers in a 128-point effort.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Redick’s new offense is also emphasizing a quicker trigger for shooters. Last year, Los Angeles attempted the second fewest FGAs (83.7 per game), with 70% of those coming with 14 or fewer seconds left on the shot clock.

Warriors vs Lakers combo

These old Western rivals have new offensive philosophies, with both teams pushing pace and taking quick shots and plenty of threes.

Stephen Curry plays more like a shooting guard with Brandin Podziemski out, which increases his open looks. Projections sit as high as 27.5 points from the Dubs' superstar.

Los Angeles’ latest big man, Walker Kessler, crashes the glass against an undersized Warriors frontcourt missing big bodies. With an emphasis on pace and quick shots, rebounding chances tick up.

Warriors vs Lakers combo

  • Over 233.5
  • Stephen Curry Over 24.5 points
  • Walker Kessler Over 11.5 rebounds

Warriors vs Lakers player props

Warriors player prop: Stephen Curry Over 24.5 points

Kerr’s new offense is leaning on Stephen Curry early in the schedule, especially with so many key cogs sitting out.

Backcourt mate Brandin Podziemski will miss the season opener for the Warriors, sliding De'Anthony Melton into the starting five and shouldering point guard duties.

That will put Curry in more off-ball roles against the Lakers, running screens and finding space in the retooled five-out playbook.

He had his best preseason performance in the finale against Portland, attempting 11 treys and finding success in the two-man game with Green. Curry finished with 20 points in 26 minutes.

Projections for Wednesday sit between 24.9 and 27.5 points, with the majority of models coming in north of 25 points. My number is 26+ given poor L.A. defense and a negative game script that pushes Curry to score more.

Lakers player prop: Walker Kessler Over 11.5 rebounds

The Lakers’ new 7-foot center will be busy on the boards in the opener.

With both offenses looking to be aggressive with field-goal attempts, there will be plenty of rebounding chances.

Kessler has a notable size edge over the Warriors’ frontcourt, with Kristaps Porzingis out and backup big Charles Bassey doubtful. That leaves the smaller Green and the slower Horford to share center duties.

Kessler will be chomping at the bit after missing almost all of last year with a knee injury suffered on Halloween 2025.

His projections for tonight sit between 11+ and 12+ boards, but given the matchup and injection of tempo for both teams, I like Kessler to corral at least a dozen rebounds for L.A.
