The Heat will introduce Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson to Miami with a win over the Timberwolves in their home opener.

The new-look Miami Heat will open their season at home tonight as they host the Minnesota Timberwolves at Kaseya Center.

With a bolstered lineup, I'm backing Miami to win at home in my Timberwolves vs. Heat prediction. Read on to see all of my free NBA picks for Wednesday, Oct. 21.

 TOP PICK
Timberwolves vs Heat prediction: Heat moneyline

Both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Miami Heat made huge offseason moves to improve their rosters, but Miami had by far the biggest addition.

Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo brings his elite scoring and all-around brilliance — he averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game last season — to a Miami squad that also added Klay Thompson and returns Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins, among others.

Minnesota added LaMelo Ball to its backcourt alongside Anthony Edwards, but there are questions for the Timberwolves. Without Naz Reid, coach Chris Finch has identified rebounding as a problem, and they'll need as many extra possessions as possible to keep up with this Heat offense.

With Miami at home, I like the Heat to win outright at up to 55%.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Heat ranked second in the NBA in scoring last season at 120.9 ppg, a number that promises to rise even higher with Giannis in the Heat lineup.

Timberwolves vs Heat combo

Miami was the fastest team in the NBA last year, leading the league in most major pace metrics. That's unlikely to change this year under Erik Spoelstra, who will lean into that approach again with Antetokounmpo as the primary scoring option.

Minnesota also ranked in the top half of the league in both pace and offensive efficiency last season, and might push the pace more with Ball at the helm. I'm backing the Over.

Speaking of Giannis, I'm also taking him to score at least 30 points to round out my combo. Antetokounmpo will be the leading scorer for Miami as long as he's healthy, and the speed of this Heat team will get him even more opportunities to score.

Timberwolves vs Heat player props

Timberwolves player prop: LaMelo Ball 35+ points + rebounds + assists

LaMelo Ball averaged 32.0 points + rebounds + assists with the Charlotte Hornets last year, and that was without a running partner in Anthony Edwards to rely on and with a notable dip in his scoring numbers. I'm expecting Ball to improve on both his points (20.1 ppg) and assists (7.1) totals from last year, while continuing to grab a healthy amount of rebounds.

Like with my other picks tonight, this one is also relying on the fast pace of play I'm expecting out of both teams, especially the Heat. I like Ball to get to 35+ PRA tonight at up to 55%.

Heat player prop: Klay Thompson 3+ threes

While it was a bit overshadowed by the addition of Antetokounmpo, Klay Thompson also adds an extra dimension to the Heat offense this year. Thompson has made 3.1 threes per game for his career, shooting 40.9% from deep.

Now 36 years old, Thompson doesn't get as much offensive usage as he once did. But even coming off the bench for the Dallas Mavericks and playing only 21.7 minutes per game last year, he still averaged 2.9 threes a night, and the high-tempo Miami offense will mean even more chances for the sharpshooter.

I like Thompson to hit 3+ from deep at up to 58% tonight.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
