While the Celtics made moves this summer, the Pistons' drama didn't lead to big-name additions. Our expert is banking on Boston's defense and 3-point variance to deliver a winning start.

After two turbulent NBA summers, the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons tip off the new season at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., with lofty expectations in a much-improved Eastern Conference.

My Celtics vs. Pistons prediction favors a deep Boston team that thrives on the road and has more cards to play.

 TOP PICK
Celtics vs Pistons prediction: Celtics moneyline

The new-look Boston Celtics are banking on Paul George, Mitchell Robinson, and future flexibility, but I expect the same old elite road form — led by a healthy Jayson Tatum.

Boston went 28-16 straight up away from home last season (27-17 against the spread), and the C's stingy defense—which allowed a league-low 107.2 points per game—could reach new heights with Robinson barricading the paint.

The Detroit Pistons opted for continuity, but the after-effects of the Jalen Duren saga are a wild card, and Detroit did little this offseason to relieve the playmaking burden on Cade Cunningham.

With Derrick White and Jordan Walsh to throw at Cade, Boston can shut down driving lanes without giving up open looks elsewhere.

The bench is another swing factor for the Celtics, and Joe Mazzulla will unleash Payton Pritchard and Hugo Gonzalez in a relentless second unit.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Mazzulla loves math, so look for Boston's 3-point barrage to tip the scales. The Celtics shot 42.1 threes per game last season (fourth-most in the NBA), while the Pistons averaged just 30.9 attempts from beyond the arc (second-fewest).

Celtics vs Pistons combo

The Celtics were 21-6 SU as road favorites last season, and I'm picking the visitors to start the post-Jaylen Brown era with a win at Little Caesars Arena.

The Under has been a winning ticket in five of the past six meetings between these squads, and that's where I'm looking tonight. Both teams were among the stingiest defenses last year, and Detroit's scoring is capped by starting two non-shooters.

Even with Robinson replacing Neemias Queta in the starting five, Tatum will have a big role on the boards, especially if this contest turns into a rock fight.

He averaged 10.0 rebounds per game in his 16 post-injury outings in the regular season (and 10.7 in the playoffs). He's adept at swooping in for rebounds when the Boston big men are dragged into pick-and-roll actions.
