Will Cuyle is the most efficient 5-on-5 shot-generator on the New York Rangers this season. He'll have plenty of opportunities vs. an Anaheim Ducks team that is below average at suppressing shots.

Will Cuylle quietly leads the New York Rangers (57%) in shot-generation efficiency during 5-on-5 play.

With special teams unlikely to make a ton of noise tonight, I'm targeting Cuylle's shots on goal with my top Ducks vs. Rangers prediction.

Read on for a full breakdown of my NHL picks for Monday, Oct. 19.

Ducks vs Rangers prediction: Under 6.5

I like the Under up to 57%.

The New York Rangers rank fourth in goals allowed per 60 minutes and are tied for 10th in expected-goal suppression, suggesting their strong results aren’t a coincidence.

Dylan Garand has really stepped up without Igor Shesterkin, while the team has done a good job of making his life easier.

The Anaheim Ducks don’t pack much of a punch at 5-on-5, relying heavily on their power play to score. Well, the Rangers rank among the Top 3 in limiting shots, expected goals (xG), and goals on the penalty kill.

Anaheim is also a top-10 team at limiting shots and xG while short-handed. With a modest 5-on-5 pace and two excellent penalty kills, seven or more goals are a lot to ask.

Ducks vs Rangers combo

I’m combining the Under with Will Cuylle to record at least two shots on goal and the Ducks to keep it close on the scoreboard.

Cuylle is averaging 3.2 shots on goal per game in New York. He is a big-bodied winger who creates a lot of his offense below the dots, and the Ducks rank 21st in shots allowed from the net front. There should be some opportunities for him.

New York is averaging 2.8 goals per game (23rd) and 23.4 shots (28th). The Rangers don't have a high-ceiling offense that's likely to run away with many games.

Anaheim is also coming off consecutive losses and hasn’t played since Friday, so I’m expecting a competitive effort as it starts its road trip.

Ducks vs Rangers combo

  • Under 6.5
  • Will Cuylle Over 1.5 shots on goal
  • Anaheim Ducks +1.5

 TOP PICK
Ducks vs Rangers player prop: Will Cuylle Over 1.5 shots on goal

Cuylle is a target for 2+ SOG to 62%.

He has generated shots very efficiently at 5-on-5, especially with Eeli Tolvanen on his opposite wing. Cuylle is generating 11.48 SOG and 19.58 shot attempts per 60 minutes with Tolvanen by his side. Those are comparable rates to players with 2.5 shot totals, if not 3.5-shot lines.

Cuylle’s home numbers are also terrific. He is averaging 3.2 shots on 6.0 attempts through five games at Madison Square Garden. The only opponents he generated fewer than six attempts against were the Lightning and Mammoth, two excellent and well-structured teams.

The Ducks play at a faster pace and rank 22nd in shots-on-goal differential per 60 minutes, making them a more favorable matchup.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Cuylle leads the Rangers in both shots on goal (9.65) and shot attempts (17.28) per 60 minutes at 5-on-5.

Ducks vs Rangers goal scorer: Pavel Dorofeyev

Pavel Dorofeyev is my preferred target to tuck one in.

He has seen noticeable increases in shot and chance generation with J.T. Miller at center rather than Mika Zibanejad.

Dorofeyev consistently scores more goals than expected, so the uptick in volume is even more beneficial for him than for most players.

He leads the team in shots and shot attempts and is clearly the focal point on the power play. The Ducks take penalties at a high rate — they sit 24th in shorthanded time on ice per game — so that’s an area where he could do some damage.
