Against the spread (ATS) pick
Following a mid-March stretch in which it lost five of six, Boston has now won six of its last nine games. The Celtics have also had the eighth-best defensive rating in the NBA over that nine-game span, a nice improvement on the team’s 16th-ranked defensive rating over the course of the season.
Boston has made some changes to its roster over the last few weeks, and it truly seems like it’s only a matter of time before the group starts to click. Perhaps this recent stretch is more of a sign of things to come. As far as this game goes, the Celtics actually match up rather nicely with the Nuggets.
Nobody in the league can defend Nikola Jokic, so he’s going to get his in this one. However, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are both capable of holding their own against Denver’s new wing duo of Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon. Both of Boston's leading scorers are questionable for tonight, however, so if one – or both – happens to sit out, then the dynamic of this game (and the spread) will change dramatically.
Marcus Smart will also likely be chasing around Jamal Murray, assuming the Nuggets guard is able to play in this one—he has missed the last few games but it seems likely he’ll be able to give it a go here.
Tristan Thompson is somebody to keep an eye on in this game. He has played well since returning in Wednesday’s win over the Knicks, and his toughness is very important to Boston.
PREDICTION: Celtics +7 (-110)
Over/Under pick
Seven of Boston’s last eight games have gone Under the total—but three of Denver’s last four have gone Over. The Celtics also happen to be coming off a game in which there were 281 total points scored against the Timberwolves.
If anybody’s style of play in this game is more likely to be imposed, it’s Denver’s. The Nuggets can score with the best of them, and it should force the Celtics to run a little and take more shots. The early tip is somewhat alarming for the Nuggets, but this should be high scoring.
PREDICTION: Over 223.5 (-110)
Player prop pick
The Nuggets were able to beat the Spurs their last time out, but they did let Derrick White score 25 points in that game. This Denver team can be vulnerable against opposing lead guards, and that’s especially true with Murray on the floor.
Keep an eye out for that, as Kemba Walker should be able to go off if he plays. But even if Murray isn’t out there, this is still a game that should go nicely for Boston's PG.
PREDICTION: Kemba Walker Over 19.5 points (-115)
