Spread analysis
After a relatively rocky start to the NBA season, the Hawks have soared back into contention with an 8-2 record over their last 10 games. The only blemishes came on losses to the Denver Nuggets on Nov. 12 and the New York Knicks on Nov. 27, which both happen to be the only games in that span where Atlanta has failed to score in triple digits.
With the spread being a pick'em, more or less, the Hawks are essentially a gimme pick against a Sixers squad that just hasn't seemed right even with center Joel Embiid back in the rotation for the last few games. Still, Philly's last two losses - vs. Minnesota, at Boston - were each only by a single point, apiece. The biggest difference, however, is the Hawks are rolling out a much better offense than either of those opponents. Atlanta ranks second in the NBA in offensive efficiency (111.1), behind just the Utah Jazz.
And while the 76ers have kept things close in their most recent losses, they've still only won three times in 10 games. Star guard Trae Young has scored 30 or more points in each of his last five games - four of which were wins. None of those opponents were especially defensive powerhouses, but the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs each rank higher than the Sixers in terms of defensive efficiency.
The Hawks have only suffered two home losses the entire season. Don't expect a third to come on Friday night against the visiting Sixers.
Prediction: Hawks -1.5 (-110)
Over/Under analysis
All the betting trends are leaning toward the under when it comes to the 76ers. Specifically, the Under is 5-1 in Philly's last six road games, including Wednesday's 88-87 loss to the Celtics.
The Hawks are not elite defenders, ranking 24th in defensive efficiency (107.8) and 20th in opponent scoring (107.9 points allowed per game), and feature a top-shelf offense so the Over has been cashing more frequently in their recent string of games.
What ultimately pushes this game toward the Under is that both Atlanta and Philadelphia rank in the bottom eight in terms of pace of play this season. With the 76ers still trying to find an offensive identity without Ben Simmons on the floor, they're not pushing scores too highly on the regular. While it's not out of the question for Young to explode for a big night on the stat sheet, no one else on the roster is even close to his 26.3 points per game. Power forward John Collins is closest with 16.5.
Prediction: Under 213 (-115)
Best bet
The Hawks should win this game straight up and even though the 76ers have kept things close in recent losses, it's highly unlikely that they lose by a single point again in such short succession.
Atlanta is riding high and is looking far more like the team that finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season than they did early on. Yes, the Sixers crushed the 122-94 Hawks in their last meeting on Oct. 30, but a lot can change in a month. Since losing eight of nine between Oct. 27-Nov. 12, Atlanta is 8-1 and isn't slowing down just yet.
