Today’s MLB props and picks
Diamondbacks -0.5 Five-Inning Runline (+110)
Arizona Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner has come back down to Earth after a six-game stretch where he looked nearly unhittable, pitching to a 1.32 ERA and limiting opponents to a .122 batting average.
Over his last two outings, Bumgarner has allowed 11 earned runs on 13 hits but those games were against teams that rank in the Top 10 in OPS versus lefties. And if there's a team he can get back on track against it’s the New York Mets. New York ranks 22nd in OPS and has scored the second-fewest runs against left-handed pitching this season.
The Mets counter Bumgarner with a southpaw of their own in David Peterson. It has been a rocky sophomore season for the New York lefty. While Peterson had some great starts, he’s struggled with his command and is good to give up a handful of runs each time he starts.
On the road, Peterson’s ERA bumps up to 5.55 and his WHIP to 1.37. Another interesting stat about Peterson is that he's struggling against left-handed hitters, allowing them to hit .341 and the D-backs are a scrappy lineup full of switch hitters and lefties.
It's understandable if you're wary of trusting either starter but Bumgarner has at least shown signs of looking like his All-Star self and the D-backs without a doubt have the more reliable lineup. Back them to have the lead through five innings.
Nationals Team Total Over 4.5 (+100)
It has been a rough season for the Washington Nationals who sit at 22-29 and are in last place in the National League East. But if there's a positive to take away, they continue to crush lefties after last night’s 11-6 win over Max Fried and the Atlanta Braves.
The Nats get the chance to keep smashing southpaws as the Braves hand the ball to Drew Smyly for this one. Smyly’s first season in Atlanta has not gone to plan. The lefty is pitching to a 5.95 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP this season and is coming off surrendering seven runs on five hits last time out against the Red Sox.
Smyly’s biggest problem has been the long ball. He gave up two home runs in that game against the Red Sox and those were numbers 12 and 13 for the season. That's the third-most dingers allowed this year. Now, he goes up against a Nationals offense that ranks third in batting average and sixth in OPS against lefties.
Win or lose, the Nats should be able to eclipse their team total in this one.
Walker Buehler Under 4.5 Hits Allowed (-110)
Don’t let the tight pants throw you off because Walker Buehler looks as comfortable as he ever has on the mound.
The Los Angeles Dodgers starter is having another fantastic season, pitching to a 2.66 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .205 batting average over his first 10 starts. Buehler has been even better at Dodger Stadium where his opponent batting average drops to .182.
Now, he faces a St. Louis Cardinals team that really struggles against right-handers on the road. St. Louis ranks 21st when it comes to hitting right-handers in general at .226 and that number drops to .216 when playing away from home.
St. Louis also ranks 23rd when it comes to hits per game on the road at 7.4 per contest, and Buehler has allowed four or fewer hits in four of his last five outings at Dodger Stadium. Look for Buehler to make the Cardinals as uncomfortable at the dish as he does in those pants.
