Braves vs Giants Picks and Predictions: Atlanta Keeps the San Fran Brooms Away

Atlanta is trying to avoid a three-game sweep against San Francisco as slim MLB betting underdogs. With the Braves are trotting out arguably their hottest starter — and the Giants' SP being very hittable — we're actually backing the Braves today.

The San Francisco Giants will be going for a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves when the teams play at Oracle Park on Sunday afternoon.

After a strong outing from their starter Friday, last night saw the Giants get an unbelievable performance from a collection of pitchers, with seven arms combining to shutout the Braves and giving up only five hits. San Francisco will lean on another quality arm today, sitting as slight MLB betting home favorites for this matinee.

Will Atlanta keep San Fran's brooms stuck in the closet? Continue reading our Braves vs. Giants picks and predictions for September 19 to find out.

Braves vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Max Fried (11-7, 3.47 ERA): Fried has been excellent for the Braves as of late, as the lefty has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last eight starts. Fried started the season poorly but this hot stretch saw his season-long ERA drop down by nearly a full run. At this point in the year, he’s back to looking like the ace the Braves have gotten accustomed to.

Anthony DeSclafani (12-6, 3.24): The Giants have won each of DeSclafani’s last three trips to the mound, with the righty giving up four runs over 17 innings across those starts. DeSclafani isn't likely to completely silence opposing bats, but he has been consistently solid for San Francisco.

Moneyline pick

The Giants are one of the most dangerous teams in the league when facing right-handed pitching, but they have been rather ordinary against southpaws. Whereas San Francisco is third in the league in homers against righties this season, the team is just 12th in the league against lefties — something to keep in mind as the Giants are facing one of the better lefty starters in baseball in Max Fried.

In 11 starts since facing the Miami Marlins on July 10, Fried has seen his ERA drop from 4.71 to 3.47. He is looking a lot like the guy that went 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA over 11 starts last year and he’ll now look to stay hot in a matchup against a Giants team that is very home-run dependent.

In addition to San Francisco hitting fewer bombs against lefties, Fried has given up just four home runs total over his last eight outings — he can really make his mark on this game if he avoids making costly mistakes.

As for DeSclafani, the righty recently faced Atlanta (on August 29) and gave up three runs on six hits in only three innings of work. The Braves hit two bombs off him in those three innings, and this just isn’t a great matchup for him — Joc Pederson (6 for 12, 3 HR) and Freddie Freeman (2 HR in 11 AB) have had success against DeSclafani in their careers.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s also worth mentioning that DeSclafani is just 2-2 with a 6.26 ERA in day games this year — a stark contrast to his 10-4 with a 2.59 ERA in night games.

PREDICTION: Braves (+100)

Over/Under pick

While this should be a good spot for Fried to pick up a victory, the lefty has given up multiple runs in three of his last four starts — including four runs (three earned) against these Giants back on August 27. If San Francisco can cobble a few runs today, that will go a long way to help Over bettors hit their number.

Meanwhile, the Braves are more than capable of hanging a crooked number on DeSclafani this afternoon. He has struggled more against lefty batters (.667 OPS vs. LHB compared to .580 vs. RHB) and as mentioned above, some of Atlanta’s key left-handed sluggers have generally hit DeSclafani hard.

Also, the Over is 6-2 in San Francisco’s last eight games — and these club are due for some fireworks after a 2-0 game on Saturday.

PREDICTION: Over 8 (-115)
