Two of the American League’s top offenses begin a series at Fenway Park tonight as the Boston Red Sox host the Toronto Blue Jays.
J.D. Martinez and the Red Sox slugged their way to a win last night over the Astros but allowed eight runs in the process. Can Vladamir Guerrero Jr. and the Jays take advantage and pull themselves out of their mini-slump? And is the Over too obvious of a bet here?

Starting pitchers
Ross Stripling (2-3, 4.71 ERA): The last time Stripling faced the Red Sox, he got rocked for six runs on eight hits in 3 2-3 and it looked as though his days as a Jays’ starter were numbered. But the right-hander has responded with two solid starts, allowing just two runs on nine hits over his last 10 innings of work.
Garrett Richards (4-4, 3.88 ERA): It's been an up-and-down season for Richards. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts but is struggling with his command a bit lately. Over his last five starts, Richards has surrendered 17 walks compared to just 24 strikeouts while opponents are hitting .280 off him.

Moneyline pick
The Blue Jays come into this American League East matchup having lost four of their last six games, scoring three runs or fewer in all four of the losses. They enter this series 5.5 games behind the Red Sox in the division standings, who themselves trail the Tampa Bay Rays by one game.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, come into this one having dropped a series to the Houston Astros but have won six of their last eight games overall as their offense continues to roll. The Red Sox have averaged 5.5 runs per game over that eight-game stretch and could make life tough for Stripling.
Even though Stripling is coming off a pair of solid starts, opponents are still hitting .283 with a .837 OPS and face a Red Sox team that ranks third in batting average and fourth in OPS when it comes to hitting off right-handers this season.
While the Jays have had success against Richards this season and are arguably as good against right-handers, Richards is supported by the stronger bullpen at the moment. The Red Sox should probably be bigger favorites than this going up against Stripling.
PREDICTION: Red Sox (-120)
Over/Under pick
When it comes to the total, 9.5 is a high number by today’s baseball standards, but it may not be high enough for these two.
The fact that the Red Sox are scoring 5.5 runs per game over the last eight games shouldn’t be a surprise considering the lineup they boast. What was surprising was the performance Boston was getting out of its pitching staff early in the season, but those numbers are starting to return to normal and they have allowed 6.2 runs per game over their last five games.
Now, they go up against a Blue Jays lineup that ranks second in batting average and third in OPS when it comes to hitting against right-handers and are fifth in the MLB in scoring, plating 5.04 runs per game. It may seem square, but we expect fireworks in this one.
PREDICTION: Over 9.5 (-110)
