Angels vs Diamondbacks betting preview
Shohei Ohtani (2-1, 2.76 ERA): In Ohtani’s last start, the phenom struck out 10 batters and gave up only two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. It was Ohtani’s second quality start in a row, and he now looks to keep it rolling against the Diamondbacks. Ohtani has struggled on the road this season, going 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA. He’ll need to be better than that moving forward, but it does help that his task in this game is outdueling a mediocre starter.
Merrill Kelly (2-6, 5.12 ERA): Kelly has allowed nine earned runs over his last two starts, and the Diamondbacks have lost in each of his last six outings. However, it isn’t all terrible for the righty. On the season, Kelly has a 3.82 ERA at Chase Field, so he does perform a lot better at home. The 32-year-old also happens to be facing a Mike Trout-less Angels team, so this isn’t exactly an untouchable lineup right now.

Betting trend to know
The Diamondbacks are 5-2 in their last seven interleague games against right-handed starters. Find more MLB betting trends for Angels vs. Diamondbacks.
The Angels are sending Ohtani to the mound in this game, and he’s the starter that gives them the best chance to win on any given night. Ohtani’s 2.76 ERA this season is the best in this Los Angeles rotation, and he also has some of the most impressive stuff amongst the group. The only issue here is that the 26-year-old has had some struggles on the away side. Ohtani’s ERA rises to 4.00 when he hits the road, which is a lot different than his 1.85 ERA at home. It wouldn’t be surprising if he gives the Diamondbacks a chance to steal this one.
For as bad as Arizona has been this season, the team does have quite a few guys that are dangerous against right-handed pitching. One of those players is David Peralta, who is batting .253 with three homers and 20 RBI against righties this season. Meanwhile, Ketel Marte is a monster against everybody, but he is hitting .320 with two homers and seven RBI against righties on the year. There’s also Josh Rojas, who has five homers and 14 RBI in 146 at bats against right-handed starters on the year, and Asdrubal Cabrera, who is hitting .299 with four homers and 17 RBI against righties. Naturally, Ohtani’s movement and velocity will give everybody a bit more trouble, but the point is that these Diamondbacks should be able to make something happen.
Kelly also is good enough to give his team a chance to win at home. The 32-year-old isn’t going to shut down this Los Angeles lineup, but a quality start is not out of the question at Chase Field. He has given the Diamondbacks three of those in his last five home starts, and he came dangerously close in a fourth, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs. If he can turn in that type of effort, you’d have to love this value on the money line.
PREDICTION: Diamondbacks ML (+118)
The Angels really need Ohtani to be excellent in this game, but the 26-year-old has given up at least three earned runs in two of his three road starts this season. Ohtani just hasn’t quite looked as in control when not pitching at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The righty also doesn’t work very deep into games, so there’s a chance he gives up a couple and then leaves the Los Angeles bullpen with a little too much work to do. That would make it a bit more likely that this game goes Over the total.
And while Kelly is a lot better when pitching at home, he is by no means good at Chase Field. The Angels have plenty of guys that can do some serious damage in this game, especially in a stadium like this. Overall, it’d be surprising if this game turned into anything close to a pitcher’s duel.
PREDICTION: Over 9.0 (-104)
