The Braves enter today with a five-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East, making this one of the more high-stakes games on Saturday's slate. My top Phillies vs. Braves predictions are calling for a Philadelphia to narrow the gap and win a low-scoring game.

Don't miss my free MLB picks for Saturday, Sept. 12, with first pitch from Truist Park scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET.

Who will win Phillies vs Braves today: Phillies moneyline (46%)

For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.

Tyler Mahle owns a 1.24 ERA across his last six starts, but a 4.12 xERA in that span suggests he's been more lucky than good. Mahle has benefited from an unsustainably high rate of runners left on base.

The Philadelphia Phillies bats have been unlucky of late, with a .240 BABIP during the last 14 days. The Phillies have the ability to get seven left-handed batters in their lineup against Mahle, which should lead to consistently advantageous matchups throughout this contest.

The Atlanta Braves' arm barn is a concern tonight, too, having used Raisel Iglesias and Didier Fuentes each of the last two days. If this is a close game in the latter frames, Philadelphia is better-equipped to come away with a win.

Play to 48%.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Philadelphia's bullpen ranks fourth in xERA this season and eighth in xERA during the last 30 days.

Phillies vs Braves Over/Under pick: Under 8.5 (53%)

Philadelphia will go with a bullpen game after Jesus Luzardo, today's scheduled starter, was scratched due to shoulder stiffness. Losing one of the league's most dominant starters on short notice isn't ideal, but the Phillies have arms that are capable of keeping them competitive in this contest.

Only Jonathan Bowlan threw more than 15 pitches in Friday's loss, and only Jose Alvarado has appeared in each of the last two days. The Phillies have multiple southpaws they can deploy situationally against Drake Baldwin and Matt Olson, and plenty of right-handed pitching to handle the rest of the lineup.

Bullpen games are unsustainable over the course of a long season, but there is evidence suggesting that they reduce scoring when used sparingly. This is a result of eliminating the time-through-the-order effects, which usually plague pitchers as hitters get multiple looks at them throughout the game.

Runs could be at a premium with Atlanta hitters not having the benefit of seeing the same arm for multiple plate appearances on Saturday.

Play to 54%.

Phillies vs Braves home run prediction: Kyle Schwarber (29%)

Kyle Schwarber demolishes baseballs, especially against right-handed pitching. He owns a staggering 20.8% barrel rate during the last 30 days, and more than half of his balls in play in that span have been in the air.

Mahle isn't particularly prone to surrendering home runs, but Schwarber is as close to matchup-proof as it gets in MLB when playing home runs.

Phillies vs Braves weather

The forecast in Atlanta this evening is relatively mild, with the temperature near 80 degrees and minimal winds. The weather shouldn't have a significant impact on the outcome of this game.
