We’ve got a busy betting slate around Major League Baseball tonight, including the series opener between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Miami Marlins.

Shane Bieber makes his Blue Jays debut tonight, and I believe he will deliver a win for his new club against a struggling Marlins squad.

Blue Jays predictions for August 22

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Bieber Hooks the Fish

Pick (+140 at BetVictor)

Shane Bieber will take the ball for the first time in 2025 as he officially makes his Toronto Blue Jays debut.

Bieber has looked sharp in a handful of minor-league starts, going 1-1 with a 2.04 ERA in three Triple-A starts for the Buffalo Bisons.

In those outings, he struck out 16 batters and walked just two. Accuracy is Bieber’s calling card, so the 8-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is certainly encouraging for Bieber backers tonight.

The former Cy-Young pitcher saw his pitch count grow from 62-to-90 pitches over his last three starts, pitching into the seventh inning in his final outing in Buffalo.

Therefore, there shouldn't be a short leash on Bieber tonight against the Miami Marlins. If all goes well, he definitely should last at least five innings to be eligible for the decision, and against a team that has lost seven of their last 10 outings, nonetheless.

Over that stretch, the Marlins are batting .239 with an -8 run differential. Overall, their offence ranks 20th this year with a 97 WRC+.

I also believe that the Blue Jays' offence will provide Bieber with some run support early.

The Blue Jays are 1st in the league in batting average with a 113 WRC+, which ranks 3rd in all of baseball. They are also averaging 4.9 runs per game this season, which is the fifth most– the Marlins rank 17th in that metric, while struggling to keep runs off the board themselves.

Miami’s pitching staff sports a 4.52 team ERA, allowing 8.4 hits and 4.8 runs per game. The Jays should be able to put up enough run support for Bieber in his debut to secure him the winning decision in his first start of 2025.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Shane Bieber Over 0.5 wins

Bo Bichette Over 1.5 total bases

George Springer Over 0.5 runs

For the second leg of the SGP, let’s take Bo Bichette to go Over 1.5 bases. He’s gone over this number in three of his last five outings and owns a career 1.143 OPS against Miami, averaging 2.65 bases per game.

For the final leg, let’s take George Springer to go Over 0.5 runs. It is the most automatic bet in baseball right now. Springer has crossed home plate in 14 straight games, scoring 19 total runs in that stretch. This is primarily due to his .477 OBP, coupled with strong hitting behind him in the lineup.
