Astros vs Giants Picks and Predictions: Webb's Home Dominance Has Us Leaning San Fran, Under

Houston and San Francisco have split the first two games of their interleague matchup, with offense being the primary theme. We're expecting the runs to dry up on Sunday, however, as the Giants send out Logan Webb, who has been near-unhittable at home.

The San Francisco Giants look for a series win in the battle of the top teams in the league when they host the Houston Astros at Oracle Park Sunday afternoon.

These clubs split the first two games of a matchup between the AL and NL leaders, with offense being the main theme. The Giants are slight MLB betting favorites for the rubber match, with the total set at 8.5.

Astros vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Luis Garcia (7-5, 3.19 ERA): Garcia has racked up at least seven strikeouts in each of his last three starts but he did give up five earned runs in just 4 2-3 innings in his last outing against the Seattle Mariners. Prior to that rough showing, Garcia had allowed three or fewer earned runs in all of his previous five road appearances.

Logan Webb (4-3, 3.36 ERA): The Giants have won in each of Webb’s last seven starts, and the righty has been a huge part of that success. Webb has given up only six earned runs during that stretch, pitching a total of 35 innings. Also, Webb has a ridiculous 1.61 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 34 strikeouts in 28 innings at Oracle Park this season, so he definitely enjoys home cooking.

Moneyline pick

On the season, Webb has a 1.61 ERA in five starts (and six total appearances) when pitching in San Francisco. He's really comfortable when taking the ball at home and it’s hard to go against somebody like that.

Also, this Astros lineup hasn’t seen much of Webb in their career, so that means that the righty should have an advantage in the early of innings. Houston might be able to catch on to what he’s throwing the second and third time through the lineup but the most runs Webb has allowed in a game this year was six.

And that happened at Coors Field — and it was one of only two starts in which he gave up more than three earned runs.

On the other side, the Giants present a tough matchup for Garcia. San Francisco has the second-highest slugging percentage in baseball against righties this season, and it's third in the league in home runs against right-handed pitching.

Garcia is not necessarily homer-prone, but he has allowed two long balls over his last three starts and could easily get punished for a mistake or two against what is a sneaky-dangerous San Francisco lineup.

PREDICTION: Giants (-112)

Over/Under pick

There’s no reason to believe that Webb would be responsible in contributing to an Over today. While the Astros have the most dangerous lineup in baseball, we just haven’t seen Webb get shelled this season.

He has had only two poor outings all year — and they weren’t even that bad. Plus, those were both on the road and he's pitching today at home, where he has been almost unhittable.

Meanwhile, the Giants do most of their damage against righties, as they have teed off on right-handed pitching all year. It wouldn’t be surprising if they hit one or two dingers in this game but don’t count on Garcia to get shelled.

That might ultimately be the difference in who wins this game... but we don't think it will affect our stance on this total.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
