The Seattle Mariners are fresh off losing two of three at home to the Minnesota Twins and now host the Los Angeles Angels for five games. The Angels are coming off back-to-back losses to the Dodgers and have now lost four of their last five and 18 of their last 20.

Shohei Ohtani will take the mound for the Angels tonight. Can Seattle start the homestand off with a victory, or will the Angels be able to get a win with their Japanese phenom on the mound?

Angels vs Mariners betting preview

Starting pitchers

Shohei Ohtani (4-4, 3.64 ERA): Which Shohei Ohtani will show up on Thursday night? Will it be the one who won his last decision against the Boston Red Sox five days ago, where he went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits? Or will it be the Ohtani that got shelled by the New York Yankees, allowing four runs on eight hits, pitching just three innings? The 27-year-old's pitching numbers are on track to equal or better 2021, but the right-hander has allowed five runs in his last two starts and eight runs in his three previous outings.

George Kirby (1-1, 3.65 ERA): The 24-year-old right-hander has only one win in seven games and it took him until the last day in May to get it. His record, however, isn’t indicative of the way he has been pitching, especially recently. Kirby got roughed up his last start against Boston, allowing five runs on six hits, including two home runs. The start before that, Kirby went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits.

Angels vs Mariners picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

Both of these teams have been fairly unreliable for bettors this season. The Angels finally broke a 14-game losing streak, but after a couple of wins, have lost three straight. The Mariners have lost four of their last six, including a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Twins.

The Mariners' inability to win is mainly due to their offense. They are 22nd in batting average, 26th in runs, and 26th in RBI. Ohtani will take the mound for the Angels and though the Japanese superstar has been inconsistent, he should be able to keep the Mariners in check.

The two-way superstar should also be able to contribute at the plate. Last night against the Dodgers, Ohtani broke up Tyler Anderson’s no-hitter in the ninth inning with a triple. Ohtani has a .259 batting average with 13 homers and 37 RBI. Despite all the losing, the Angels are performing decently at the plate. Los Angeles ranks 17th in batting average, 13th in hits, 16th in runs, and 15th in RBI.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (-122 at WynnBet)

Over/Under analysis

Both of Thursday’s starting pitchers have been spotty and that inconsistency should help the Over hit. Although the Mariners have struggled offensively, the one thing they do right is hit the ball out of the park. Seattle is 14th in home runs, one of its highest rankings in offensive categories.

The Angels, meanwhile, rank sixth in the majors in home runs with 78. Mike Trout leads the team with 16, followed by Ohtani at 13. The Over for the Angels is 3-0-1 in their last four against teams with a losing record and 6-0 in their last six road games against a team with a losing record.

Additionally, the Mariners have seen the Over hit in 14 of their last 18 games against teams below .500.

Prediction: Over 7 (-115 at BetMGM)

Best bet

The Angels have been losing at a torrid pace in the month of June. One of the games that they did win, however, was a 5-2 decision over the Red Sox. Ohtani was on the mound for that contest and pitched well.

Though he has been somewhat inconsistent, his numbers seem to be on the upswing. Throw out the poor performance against the Yankees two weeks ago and Ohtani has gone at least six innings in five starts, allowing eight runs and 24 hits while striking out 39.

George Kirby takes the mound with most questions than answers. The Mariners starter has allowed 19 runs in his last six games, as well as 38 hits. His ERA has climbed from 0.90 in the middle of May to 3.65. Kirby is also prone to giving up homers recently, allowing four in his last two starts.

Trout and company will be all too willing to add to that total. With Ohtani on the mound and the Angels’ bats looking like they can get to Kirby, I like the Halos on the run line.

Pick: Angels -1.5 (+143 at BetRivers)
