It’s often said the Champions League really gets going when it reaches the knockout stages, something that happens this Tuesday. We have two games on the first matchday with Copenhagen vs. Man City being an interesting affair to handicap.
The home team comes into this after a winter break that’s not seen it play any meaningful games since the final game of the group stage, a 1-0 vitory against Galatasaray to seal the second spot in the group.
With just eight points after six games, they managed to qualify with only two wins. They were rewarded with a tough tie against Man City, arguably the most difficult team to face in the competition.
Man City are the current European champions, winning the Champions League as one-third of their treble last year. They struggled earlier in the season to hit the heights they had a year ago but have found form over the last month. And despite a slow start to the season, they still won all six Group G games, scoring 18 goals and allowing just seven.
Given Man City’s impressive record in qualification for the knockout stages, as well as their recent improvement in form, it’s no surprise that my best for this game is for Pep Guardiola’s team to win with a 1.5-goal handicap. They’ll need to win by two goals to secure a winning wager.
However, the form is undeniable. They’ve won 10 games in a row across all competitions and have won their previous three games by 2+ goals. They’re playing at such a high level right now that it’s really hard to see them losing. It's way more likely they'll win by plenty of goals.
In that 10-game winning streak, we’ve seen them score a combined 29 goals. They’ve scored at least three goals in all but two of those games. They also averaged three goals per game in the group stages.
They now have Erling Haaland back, with the Norwegian recently returned from a short-term injury and the brilliant Kevin De Bruyne back after being out for the bulk of the season until January.
The big issue for Copenhagen isn’t just the gulf in quality between the two teams but also the level of match fitness they’ll have. It’s been two months since their last real game, with the team only playing a couple of friendlies and Atlantic Cup games in that break, which really won’t have set them up well for a game against the best team on the planet.
City will take advantage of that lack of match sharpness with their intensity and unrelenting movement of the ball, getting it into dangerous positions and almost certainly winning by 2+ goals.

We’re adding a further two legs onto the best bet for the game, the first of which is for Kevin De Bruyne to either score or assist. The Belgian returned in January after an extended spell out which had seen him miss most of the whole league season up to that point.
He hit the ground running in his return and has almost instantly made Man City look like a better team and more like the team we saw last year. He’s now played six games in all competitions since the return and has six goal contributions in that time, scoring one and assisting five more.
Given the lack of match fitness in the Copenhagen team, I think we’ll see his speed of movement and technical ability really shine in this game. He should be able to help his team find the back of the net.
Then to wrap up our SGP we’re backing both teams to score: no, meaning that Guardiola’s team will keep a clean sheet. Man City’s 10-game winning streak has also seen six clean sheets and with the match fitness of Copenhagen being an issue, it surely means we’re going to see them drained by City’s possession approach. Goals will be hard to come by for the home side.
It’s also worth remembering that in two meetings with City during last season's group stage, they didn’t manage to score once.

FC Copenhagen vs Man City side and Over/Under analysis
Considering my best bet is for Man City to win with the handicap, it’s clear I’d back City to win on the moneyline too, at least in theory, although I wouldn’t personally bet on them at odds of -400, which are far too small to be worth the risk.
If you want to back the home side, which I really wouldn’t, then you could get odds of +1,100, with the draw coming in at +540.
Over 2.5 goals comes in at -164, with the Under at +139. I’d lean toward backing the Over given the firepower that City have on display but I can’t see Copenhagen scoring at all, meaning we’d need all three goals to come from the English side.
The Over 2.5 has landed in 83.3% of Man City’s road games in the league this season, and in all three of their games away from home in the Champions League with Guardiola’s men scoring three goals in each.
